    Etch Help

I have been using vinyl stencils that are adhesive backed for my logo. They work well on mirror or semi mirror polished blades. But on blades that have a brushed finish they will bleed under the stencil following the light scratches and ruin the mark. Any fix for this. I may have to change to a...

    K thermocupler question.

Thanks all for the information. The first one burned out after much use. I replaced it with a longer one on the advice of my supplier because it was tougher than the original. I moved it lower in the oven than the first one. I believe I damaged it while loading the oven. Sent from my XT907...

    K thermocupler question.

What part of the TC does the measuring. Is it the tip? How much needs to be exposed to get a true reading in the HT oven? I am on my third one in 3 months. Any suggestions?

    Buffalo Rasp question

GHEzell Thank for the reply. Up until now I have been using known steel. 1095, 440 and D2. I know that there are some files that will make great knives. The information you provided is exactly what I was looking for and I will give it a try. Thanks. Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk

    1095 Quench

I did my first salt brine quench on 1095 today. Better results then the canola oil quench. I have seen several recipes for the mixture. I used 13 1/2 oz of salt to a gallon. No soap or jet dry. I was wondering if there would be a benefit to adding soap and Jet Dry. Any suggestions on recipes...

Looking for a start in knifemaking

If you will be sending the blades out for heat treat the steels you want to use are great. If you want to heat treat at home I would suggest 1080 or 1084. These can be heat treated at home with good results and simple methods. Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk

    HT Oven Help

Mike The plans are here http://www.budgetcastingsupply.com/papers/HT-FURNACE.pdf as well as many other locations online. I bought the coils from Budget Casting Supplies. The plans call for 2 coils. This is where I made my mistake. I put 2 240v coils wired together in the oven. You only need one...

    1095 Quench

Thanks for all your input on my question. I have done a lot of reading on this forum and others regarding the type of quenchants to use for 1095. There are two definite camps on this topic. One is Parks 50 or equivalent and the other is Canola or brine. The train of thought seems to be evenly...

    1095 Quench

I am using canola and olive oil to quench my 1095 blades. I can do 4 to 5 blades at a time in my oven. I heat the oil to the 125 degree range. My question is this. After the first blade the temp of the oil has risen above 125 and will continue to rise with each blade. By the time the last blade...
