    Red Layout Dye?

I have seen the red in the brush on variety and it just looks too much like blood for my comfort. I tend to scrape or cut myself somehow every time I go into the shop. With the blue dye, there's no question it's dye. That's just my paranoia talking though. I agree the dye does help keep the...

    Not to good to ask

Sometimes some Semichrome or Flitz polish is all you need to remove that last bit of cloudiness. Give it a try

    Screwed bolsters on slippies

Call me old fashioned but I prefer the look of the pinned and soldered bolsters. It's an aesthetic thing and not a practical thing for me. If they're done correctly there is no need to disassemble. I will say that when I make my first slippie, it will be screwed together. I would hope to become...

    Pokechoppa!

You are correct, sir! That's exactly my inspiration. You are also too late to get in on the BBQ. It didn't make it to Sunday. Got another in the freezer though. Some future product testing is on the horizon.

    Frustration = Discovery!

Funny I did almost the same thing a while back. I used .125" micarta and covered it with some leather so that it would give just a bit. It works really well. I just finished a knife that's almost 3" from edge to spine and the palm sander really did the trick.

    3 finger utility

I finished this one a few weeks ago and am just now getting around to taking some pics. Its a pretty nice little knife. I think I'll make one for me. It's the first knife that someone offered to buy before I even finished it. This one goes to the Orkin man. He said it's perfect for his utility...

    Pokechoppa!

Pokechoppa! << UPDATED >> The last time I smoked some barbecue I had a heck of a time chopping it. My largest kitchen knife just didn't give me the power I needed, so I set out to make my own. Here's what I came up with. It's heavy like a cleaver but designed to do some slicing as well...

    Kitchen knives you have built

Here's one I made for my sister. She is a professional cook. It's based off a Thai cook's knife. I've gotten good reviews on it's performance so far. There's a bigger version I just finished made for chopping. Maybe I'll get some pics of it this weekend. Here are the specs: Length...

    Jimping after the fact

I had to to that on a knife that had a flaw. I got a carbide hacksaw blade used for tile. Cost about $5. It looks like this... It cut some nice grooves in hardened CPM154. I cleaned them up with some sandpaper on a small file. Worked like a charm!!

    How Do You Dye Epoxy?

I use some toner from a Xerox machine. When the toner cartridge is used up there is usually a small amount left in the cartridge that you can save. It works great and a little is all you need. I realize you probably have this covered by now, but I can send you some if you want to try it.

First attempt at a kitchen knife

I have been working off and on trying to make a kitchen knife. They are a little more complicated than they seem, as I found out. This one is based loosely on a Thai cook's knife. Here are the specs:Length: 10.25" Blade: 5.75" Steel: 440C cryo treated Handles: Blue G10 with white and black...

    Satin finnish

I have been using Kobalt cutting fluid from Lowe's and it gives a pretty good finish as well. I bet it's similar to the Mobil 1 only more expensive and in an easy-to-dispense bottle. I do like that it is not petroleum based. I'll give the Mobil 1 a try on my next one and maybe save some bucks...
