I've had luck with this: HT at 1900F-plate quench, temper 2 hrs at 1170F 1 time. Good luck and be sure to show us the finished knife. -Phil

Yep. Sounds like the detent ball is sticking out farther than the thickness of your washers.

Been tempering mine at 1170. Haven't had one break so far...knock on wood.
