    52100 & w2 heat treat

Doug, I have a couple of 52100 (Aldo's) blades profiled and ready to start grinding. For the HT, I am planning on heating in the forge to non magnetic, then edge quenching in olive oil. Then oven draw back. What temp for the oven draw back? Any words of advice?

    Patent issued.

Congrats Fred! I have a friend who wanted to copyright a logo and took him some major $$$, 4 years and many head aches along the way. I'm sure that is quite a sense of accomplishment.

    Showtime for newbie!

Great start Pat! I think what Bill is asking is....did you harden them?....meaning heating them up in a forge or with a torch till they are non-magnetic (somewhere close to a dull orange color) and then quenching them in some sort of fluid.....that part was missing from the description of your...

Just curious, did you count the number of forward passes with the file to keep a consistent depth for each groove, or just eyeball it? I'm assuming you measured and laid out where each groove should be.

I can understand that feeling completely. Being a newbie myself I have definitely had the thought "ok, do I have everything right? check it over again, is this what you should be doing and the right way to do it? You've got a lot of time wrapped up in this and you don't want to screw it up...

    New grinder build

The farther apart the pillow blocks are, the more stable the drive shaft will be and the less chance of there being any vibration at high speed due to the shaft, key stock or pulleys being slightly out of balance. (out of balance like a car tire and wheel might be)....if there is any...

    Knife #2 just needs sharpening

Thanks for the kind words guys. Rodney, its an accelerated rusting process that my mentor and I have been tinkering with trying to get the right blend of chemicals. The goldish color on the blade is just heat color from the oven draw back.

    Knife #2 just needs sharpening

Here are some pics of knife #2 and my 2nd lanyard as well. I changed my design from knife #1 because it felt too short in my big hands. The wife says #1 fits her hand just fine and told me that since I didn't like it, it was hers. :) The blade is O1, edge quenched with oven draw back @...

Smoke and prayes for our friends and fellow knifemakers down south.

Yes, most definitely. Prayers and smoke sent. I have a few family members in and around Mobile. Does anyone know if Mobile was hit? Called my mom (in Ohio) this morning and she said she couldn't reach any of them. I hope it's just a power outage and not something worse.
