    Rust under scales

I am going to glue these up. I do like the idea of removable scales to change out easily. This is a tactical style knife and sometimes people like to "customize" the scales to their preference. I never thought of powder coating, good idea. I work strictly with carbon steels so rust is always an...

    Rust under scales

Thanks for the reply! I always like to try different things and while I was making this knife with these screws I thought ,why not leave them removable then considered the rust issue. After considering the rusting issues I am going to glue it up but thought I'd check for other suggestions. Steve

    Rust under scales

I have glued my scales in the past, so I thought I would try something different and make a knife with removable scales. I finished the knife but now I am concern with moisture getting under the scale and causing problems down the road. What do you all do ? thanks Steve

What is the most difficult step of knifemaking for you?

It would be slotting the guard, just when it looks good you get it on and there is one little gap ARRRG !! My least favorite is hand sanding those last stubborn scratches ...steve

    Burner advice ?

I have made a few burners in the past and had some of the same problems. My first thought is the size hole on your nozzle is maybe too small causing to build up too much pressure and not giving you enough gas to get real hot. It is a balancing act to get the right mixture. I have used a #60 to...

    Soft/hard after ht

junk/unknown steel is good to practice forging with but when it come to heat treating you need to know what you have to reliably produce the same results every time. It could be you had a lot of decarb on the surface so if you ground the top layer off you would be into the harder steel just a...

    Peanut ?'s

Like Darrin said I would go with the quench oil. You can order McMaster-carr 11sec oil for $16 a gal . I use this on my 5160 with great results. You are way better off using oil designed for it purpose .....steve

I would be interested in seeing your press pics Darrin. I agree with Ed in having your name on the blade, so at the blade show I ordered a stamp. I just have not been able to get good results so I haven't used it on a knife. steve

    Cruforge V/ 1085V

I have made 5 or6 knives out of cruforge V so I am certainly no expert. I did think it forged fairly well , it does decarb and you need to leave plenty of steel to grind off after heat treating .I tempered it at 400 worked good 375 was just too low. The test/ shop knife I made has held up well...
