Thanks Ed , yes after I started looking at it there are lots of places that must weld up and no way to prep.It looks very cool but I think maybe just a one time thing will work for me . To much work for another shop knife, like I need another one of those.......Steve

    Cable Damascus

I know what you mean I listen a lot just have a problem with the recall portion.LOL I am sure that's it, not welded good. I was thinking it would create problems down the road like rust in those areas. I know I would not sell it like that. Now I have to tell my friend his welding job wasn't that...

    Cable Damascus

I will start off by saying this is the first time I have Used cable Damascus. A friend of mine sent me a billet he made in his shop so I forged a knife out of it great. When I finished and etched there are small pits along the lines of the cable just randomly spaced. My question is this normal...

    leaf spring machete

You might try tempering at 375 for 2 hr x2 most leaf spring steel is 5160 ( 450 might be on the high side ) and definitely normalize it 3 time. Have fun and good luck...steve

Thanks for the response. It may be decarbing, I didn't grind much at all after heat treating maybe that's it . Yes my test blade have performed great, one I took all the way to destruction ( cut 2x4, cut nails, cut rope and still shave no edge curl or wear ) . That's why I was surprised when the...

    Cru-foge V HT

Ok so has any one used this steel and had it tested. I was testing some steels to see how my procedures were working in the Heat Treating process and my cur-forge came out a little low ( RC 57) before tempering. I was a little disappointed . I use McMaster-Carr quenching fluid(11 sec.) works...

    fixing a small problem

Thanks Leatherman for the tip. I did a faux type stitch and I think it will work out great. I was using a little thicker welt but after some time the knifes didn't seem as snug in the sheath, so thought I would try a thinner welt to hold the knife tighter. live and learn. Thanks Steve

    fixing a small problem

I didn't think of using faux stitching that could solve the problem.Would you glue the stitches and/or just wrap them under the welt? Yes that is my problem I went one stitch to far also, could have used a thicker piece of leather for the welt .thank for all the help steve

    fixing a small problem

Yes it dose have a welt I miss-judged the placement of the last stitch and was hoping to save the sheath without having to make another one.In the picture, I placed some of the stitching in to show the area I was Talking about. I was looking at a rivet in the top stitch. Thanks for all the...

    fixing a small problem

I made a sheath for a knife and it came out nice, except for one problem.(This is your basic pouch type sheath and the stitching comes up and over for 2 stitches). The blade is just barely cutting the stitch after some use. I am thinking of placing a brass rivet in the top hole which I think...

    So.......How do I do this

the last pics looks better.you have to have the blade clean. If you want darker color then after etching just use 0000 steel wool that will keep the hamon line more pronounce. There are lots of ways to get different looks.great knife... Steve

with out a power hammer you have a long project there. I agree with the friends work for beer our my second option would be find another smaller piece of steel. if you do use it like Rusty said cut a piece out and forge the blade cut. Then shape the handle. good luck....Steve
