Had my first forging lesson Sunday!

Funny, at 44 years of age, not much really excites me anymore. Yesterday I got excited and I'm still a bit pumped. Yesterday morning I went over to Bob Warner's place for a forging lesson and am now hooked on the idea! Hooked because I actually made something and REALLY hooked because I saw...

Oh the things I have been missing!

Well, the antiquated Kodak didn't pan out so I had to wait until tonight to post a pic of what all I have done thus far. None of these knives are complete by a long shot. Detail work that needs to be done, etc... What I have listed: 14" OAL chef knife from a blank with lacewood...

Your Favorite Wood and Metal Polish

For a first blade you are coming along well I would say. A light and easy touch is the only way to go with the HF grinder since it stalls so easily. If you can, try and make a new platen for the grinder or reinforce the one you have now to true it up a bit. That should help along with going...

    A brother's First custom knife...

WOW! Need another brother?!?! I really like the way the knife came out, but I LOVE the way the file teeth can be seen behind the bolsters! Great looking file work as well. That's something I haven't even attempted yet, but plan to practice a bit on some el cheapo steel I bought just for that...

Oh the things I have been missing!

The wife left yesterday on a cruise with her mother and took both cameras! I found an ANTIQUE Kodak digital in the back room that has a memory card the size of a matchbook in it and it runs off of AA batteries. I have some batts charging so we'll see if I can get some shots of what I...

    Drilling HT Blade

+1 on that info. Also, make sure you use a vise, the carbide tipped bits like to grab and can toss and spin things around on short notice. Charlie

Your Favorite Wood and Metal Polish

Rebel, the one you are showing is a blasted finish. As the others have said you'll need to get the sanding marks out from the first grit before moving to the next. Right now I'm using a HF special 1x30 and have found that if I move from the 80 to 120 and then to 220 or so for my final machine...

    My first coffin handle WIP.

Now that was just funny IMO!!! :D Great looking knife and great way to get started! My first real job was working for a welding company. First thing the boss did was put me on a grinder. He said if you can't do the hard part of the job you'll never be a welder... You have proven you...

    a 1725 buffer

I'm using a HF special grinder and did exactly what Stan did... Stripped the guards off and put on the buff wheels. If you've never used a buffer before PLEASE be careful and use it wisely... They can, and WILL throw knives at you! Charlie

Oh the things I have been missing!

I got started making knives back in the early 80s in FFA and continued on until college activities, marriage, and career took over. I’ve never forgotten about knife making, but I did forget a few of the great things that go along with it! The feel of a warm piece of metal in your hands that...

Look like some serious blades! Do you bead blast and then profile? I like the contrast. Charlie

    July 4 Knives

I like it a lot. Looks like you spent some serious time on the blade as well. What is the handle made from? I get to try my hand at the forge tomorrow if all goes well! Charlie

1st knife in 15 years almost done!

I finished the knife last night and realized that I don't have a camera! The wife left on a cruise with her mother and took the good one AND the cheapy! Looks like pics will come on Monday when I can bring mine home from work. Love being back into this! Have a chef knife and a skinner in the...

1st knife in 15 years almost done!

Thanks! Been a while, but I'm getting back into the swing! Going to try and finish this critter tomorrow. Once complete is it ok to post in the custom section or any other area? Don't want to get into trouble for double posts. The next pics will be with better light I hope... Charlie

    Dallas are sheath makers

Looking to make a few knives for Christmas presents for the men in the family and I have NEVER been any good with leather... I screw up a belt when I put it on! Looking to find someone in the Dallas/Fort Worth area that makes sheaths. Drop me a PM or post here and hopefully we can...

1st knife in 15 years almost done!

This is the first knife I have made in 15 years! It feels GREAT to be back into a hobby where I have something to show for my efforts! The folks on here have really shown me some new and GOOD ways to make knives that I had never seen before (been lurking for many months prior to joining)...
