    Hidden Tang Construction, my way

Bruce - Great tutorial! Thank you for making it look so very simple. :o Two Questions: 1) I've been making hidden tang knives almost exclusively and have learned a few of the procedures you show by trial and error. The process you show that I am not able to mimic is milling out the tang...

    Four More in the Works

Time for the latest installment of my four knife build: Blades or all hardened and hand rubbed to 1000 grit. Now its on to the guards and bolsters. Here's the bowie. The guard is a piece of sand molded brass cut from a 40 lb plate. I have squared it up on my disk sander and drilled/filed...

Bill - I think "Pack Rat Properties" and "Extreme Filth" are the applicable service options here. There may even be a bit of "Bio Hazard Cleanup" needed as well!! I may be callin'. The thing that really gets me is the number of oily rags(linseed, tung, antique, etc.) left balled...

DISCLAIMER: This is NOT my shop. I claim/own no responsibility for the condition of this shop. This place is owned by a friend who's a fairly talented woodworker, as well as non-stop tea drinker, human tobacco chimney, and founding member of the "I Like Dust Club". This place is a very...

    That Shimmer

That's also what I'm curious about. Is this indicative of the quality of my heat treat/tempering process?

    That Shimmer

Jon - No. I've figured out how to eliminate those "fishhooks" by just going in one direction. I'm fine with that. What I'm trying to describe appears to be unrelated to the sand paper scratches. The steel itself seems to be rippled, but with very small ripples.... smaller than a pin head...

    Four More in the Works

Here's a few in-progress shots: These four blades have now been heat treated and tempered. I have just run all four through the grinder to clean them up a bit: Starting the hand sanding at 100 grit: Getting there: I love this shot: Just sanding, and sanding and more sanding......: I...

    That Shimmer

Being somewhat new to knife making, I'm constantly uncovering little mysteries. This one involves the "look" of my finished blades. I've been using O1 steel and hand sanding down(up) to 1000 grit. I use a stout piece of smooth oak with one leather face and one bare wood face. This tool is then...

    Yet another Grinder Question

Doug - I like the look of that Coote grinder. This looks like it might be just the ticket. I can get a 1 1/2 hp motor for it as well as a speed controller. I take it you've had no issues with this machine's functionality or maintenance?
