    Synthetic Motor

Thanks Kevin, I really appreciate your comments. I am trying to make the best performing blade I can. Unfortunatley sometimes I have to use what I can get ahold of and what I can afford.

    Synthetic Motor

Thanks for all the great advice guys. If anyone has more comments, please keep them coming. I am trying to make the best performing knife I can. I have some skill and equipment limitations, but hopefully they will both grow.

    Synthetic Motor

The cuts on the rope were slicing cuts, not push or chop cuts. The blade is about 3 - 3 1/3" inches ant not that heavy, I don't think it would make much of a chopper. I don't know if I had to quench it three times, but I chose to. What kind of results should I be getting?

    My new "Portable Knife Shop"

That is really a nice looking set up. Also nice grinder! The only problem I see is it looks to clean. Congrats and good job.

    Synthetic Motor

I guess I should at least add the steel I was using was 52100 and the oil was 20W-50 sythetic motor cycle oil. (no slip promoters or something like that) I was just going for the weight not the motorcycle type. I did 3 edge quenches using a torch and 3 tempers at about 380F. Got pretty...

    Synthetic Motor

Does anyone use synthetic motor oil for quenching? I know this info must already be out here, but I did a search and could not find it. I switched form mineral oil to sythetic motor oil and got much better results. Guess i do need to get some real quench oil though. The motor oil is much...

    Quench tank

I probably should have thought of asking this a long time ago, but here is my question. I have a small shop and use differnt size baking pans to quench my blades. They hold from about a quart to about half gallon. What would be a minimum recommended size/volume. The amout of oil would surely...

    Temp display for forge

Thanks for the quick reply Doug. I guess to refine my question more, I can certaily see why you would use the pyrometer for the HT and welding, but is it just not necessary for forging. I may be getting out there on this, but if keeping grain growth down is very important and maybe you did...

    Temp display for forge

This may be a silly question but I will ask. I am new to forging and currently only have a small home built forge. I am hoping to buy or build a bigger one. I was wondering if anyone uses a temacuople and temperature display for thir forge. If forging at the right temprature and keeping...

Help a brother out ???? Tools to build ????

Let me know how you like that rotary platen. I would REALLY like one of those, but I am having to pay taxes instead of get a refund. (it's not because I made a lot of money)

    File Guide

I used the magnum file guide today. Really nice, everything came out nice and square. Now if I only had a swivel vice. Hopefully I can get the hole in the guard nice and square and we will be in business.

    File Guide

Magnum file guide arrived yesterday. It has no flex, and seems like a very nice piece. The alignment pins seem to fit well, not a forced fir but reasonably tight. If there was any variance I would say it is in the .00XX" area. I have not used it but did fit it up on a blade it will be used...

    Grinder rust prevention

Thanks for the tip. I think I can pick some of this up at my local Sears store. As for painting, I contacted the folks at Beaumont and they did not recommend paiting the KMG grinder. They did really say why, just didn't recommend it. Not knocking them, they are nice folks and make a great...

    Grinder rust prevention

I have a KMG grinder and it has a lot of exposed bare metal on it. Here im MS is it pretty humid and I am always fighting off rust. I usually wipe it down with some sort of oil/rust preventative when done. (trurecoil,CLP,triflow) What do some of you other guys use for this?

    Persimmon anyone?

I am not a knife or wood expert, but I will share this. back when they made the wooden drivers and fairway wood, oil hardened persimon was the hardest and usually most prized of wood. I have a old Tommy Armour made in the 50s, oil hardened persimon driver and I don't think you could drive a...

    File Guide

Thanks Josh I am going to upgrade to the magnum. As big a fight as it is to get a guard fitted up for me, I am not going to let $9-10 stand in the way. I am a broke begining knfemaker, but I want to build the best I can. If I could only afford a mill... To Qutoe Chad Nichols " I am...
