    Newbie- Flat grinding help?

AMEN! The bubble jig is not magical. It took me about three blades to learn to use it effectively but now my grinds match on both sides of the blade and go more than 3/4 inch up the side of the blade. I have the greatest admiration for those who can eye ball the correct bevel angle when blade...

    Necker for my Dog

Hmmm, I would have thought the handle would have been shaped differently to accommodate his paws. Must be a pretty hand animal.

Help setting up around a Craftsman 2x42

Skip the aluminum oxide unless you plan to use them with wood. I've used them to make knives but they lose effectiveness pretty quickly when used on metal. I find that I don't use the very fine grit belts as much as I though I would. The speed of the belt, the "bump" of the splice, and my lack...

What exactly am I looking at here?

I have the same situation with my charcoal forge. The explanation that made the most sense to me was: "Your surface blisters are either just overheating the surface, or possibly getting surface infusion of carbon (kind of like case hardening) which lowers the melting temperature at the surface...

Does this look normal? What is it?

I have the same situation with my charcoal forge. WIP/What's wrong

How about grinding off the top of the guard until it's flush with the antler? I would make the sides flush with the antler also. - Paul Meske

    Purse Knife

That looks really nice and smooth. Looking at it just gave me an idea. incorporate a fingernail file somewhere on the blade then she can pull it out and do her nails. If that doesn't intimidate people at work I don't know what will.

    my micro neck knife....

What? No gut hook?!?!?! Seriously, very nice job. But no good deed goes unpunished, and your punishment consists of a couple of questions. What is holding the knife in the sheath (or maybe scabbard would be a better term?)? I don't know much about neckers except you wear them around your neck...

    My first knife design

byfbo Thanks for sharing your experience with us. We're learning along with you. Does the laser cutting harden the edge where it was cut? Maybe you could use the laser to cut the 1/4" stock thinner? ;-) Which leads to the next question how tick of stock can the laser handle? How does it...

    New blade

I think you're doing well. Make sure you drill your holes before heat treatment. I notice you added a small choil. I do that too. How are you grinding the bevels? Is it flat ground? What do you find most challenging? Taking pictures from different angles can reveal different aspects to the...

    WIP friction folder oops.

Quote: soooo. "I just trimmed them off. and of course it doesn't look all that great and I scratched the blade. But It was my first folder and it still felt like I had invented the wheel, so I'm proud of it." YES! You stated it PERFECTLY!

    The Frozen Tundra of Wisconsin

Greetings to everyone. I retired in January of 2008 and as soon as it got warm enough to work in the garage I FINALLY tried my hand at making a knife. I'd assembled handles on pre-made blades as far back as the late 1970's and though I wanted to I never got around to attempting to make my own...
