    Blade Finish Help

Yeah, when it's just rubbing the finish there's not much you can do other than adjust the sheath. That's why I went to the extra layer of tape. hehe. I got sick of that issue cropping up. I put another layer or two along the edge as well, to make sure it's got clearance and isn't being pressed...

    Blade Finish Help

The kydex shouldn't be scuffing the knife that much, is it scratching or more just a rub that wears on the finish over multiple uses? If you're getting actual scratches you probably have something embedded in it or just in there loose. I'd start with rinsing it out a few times. If the scratching...

All done with knife number two!!!!!!!

Great work, that sucker's SHINY. Don't worry, the sandpaper doesn't mind getting used. Though occasionally it objects to having large sheets reduced to smaller pieces by giving papercuts.

    Mirror Polish tricks and tips?

Try the Gators, Trugrit has them up to 600 for the 2x42, which is a lot easier to start from for a mirror finish. They don't hop. I grind my blade, get to 120 with ceramics, cleanup the plunge with a 120 grit jflex, then switch to the a100 gator and work my way to the A30. They don't GRIND as...

I have to ask a question on Canola Oil

Without touching on the other issues, I've been using the same batch of canola for about a year and a half now. I have several gallons of it in a 60 size nitrogen tank that had the top cut off and turned into a cap to protect from contamination. Keeping in mind my northern location and that it's...

    Small Shop Stainless?

From my understanding, you really just need solid and reliable temp control so you can manage the soak times at accurate temps. After that it's just a question of using the right foil wrap for the top temp you'll get to and either plates or some other quench method. The trend I saw was away from...

Steel type and chart for explaining the abilities.....

Or, to really simplify it. Aldo's 1084.

    Short on work-space?

I may have to do something like that. I was wondering where I'd find space for a real buffer, particularly once my 2x72 shows up. It will take more space than the grinder it replaces so things will get even tighter on the bench. Something like this over on the side would be perfect.

Anyone else having problems with Norton Blaze...

Laurence, did you try different speeds with the Norzons? I have no experience with them, just wondering if maybe that would change their performance. Or maybe different pressures.

Finally got around to finishing another knife

Very nice, I really like the Blackwood pair. Great style. I think as long as the owner keeps it cleaned and a bit polished it'll look great with the eventual patina.

Opinion time: How should a knife be labeled by the maker?

My current mark is just my logo and name, sometimes just the logo. I do this even if it's not sole authorship, but the buyer is aware of the status. I'm curious about all the responses to this as well. I think location is less important than it used to be, but is still valuable if there are...

    1x30 belt sander speed idea

For the Coote and griz it's mostly just the design limitations rather than power, I guess I phrased it wrong. The Coote in particular is a well made machine that has it all over the smaller stuff. When it comes to the design, there are differences but as far as I'm concerned the Bader and the...

    1x30 belt sander speed idea

Thanks. I've given grinders a lot of thought since I started. I came into it eyes wide open in regards to my 2x42, but it was all I could afford to start with. I've taken the time since then to read everything folks have said, play with and get a feel for all sorts of different machines. It all...

    1x30 belt sander speed idea

More speed isn't what you need, more power is. Unless your machine can stand having you push quite firmly. My little 1x30 certainly can't do that, it's a constant balance of pressure and speed. Realistically, it is either spinning far faster than I'd like or about to stall. I don't use it for...

    The Business of Knife Shows

GOOD Sales summed up Mr. Fowler has it dead on. I do a lot of sales outside the knife world and am always amazed at how many companies and salesmen miss this key difference between a one time sale and long term sales. If you're selling something where repeat customers don't really exist, and...

    Wave accounting?

Has anyone tried the Wave accounting service? I did a little searching on them that came back positive and am giving it a test run. http://waveaccounting.com/ is their main page. If it works out it seems like a nice solution for a small/home business, or even personal accounting. I've got the...

    show us your wood...

Not as stunning as most of what's been posted, but this is what I just got in to use on some kitchen knives. Lousy cell phone pic, sorry about that. All stabilized. Box Elder, Maple and Madrone. The madrone looked kind of pink when I was ordering and I figured I'd actually be saving it for a...

    3rd Annual KD July KITH

I'm in. I'm new here but lots of us know each other from BF. :) Now to decide which idea to make as a KITH knife... It seems silly to just use one of my regular patterns, but then again, I don't want to stray so far from my comfort zone it's unfinished or has first generation flaws as I call...
