This one might have been a little ambitious

Finally got my second knife in the books. I have some things that I dont like and I dont think are up to my capabilities. I think I know how to fix these flaws and will strive to do better on my next blade.

The cross hatch is actually just bad lighting overhead. I'm going to try to clean up the notches with a dremel and hope it comes out without damage.

So this came out nothing like what I saw in my head. Over all i think it will be a "decent" knife. Still needs a few finish coats on the handle. When it is done and I can get some better pics I will repost. PLEASE critique anything that you see wrong. I have pitched out some flaws but may be...

    "The Moment", For Me

About to finish my second knife and my moment is when I can look at it off the grinder and would be ok showing it to other people.

This one might have been a little ambitious

The way I see it, if I put up my first works and people with more experience see my mistakes and give guidance on how to correct them I shorten my learning curve.

This one might have been a little ambitious

After shutting down for time with my girls this evening, I think I have it ready for heat treat. Definitely have some flaws do be addressed post ht. Not sure if I'm gonna try to go plungless or just bring the lines back.

This one might have been a little ambitious

I took up knife making as a way to unwind and hammer out some issues. In that I have no intention of ever taking orders. If what I make sells, awesome. If not many people I know will get some very almost pretty decent gifts.

This one might have been a little ambitious

I'm using a pipe in my forge and a pid to monitor temps. Blade is 1084 so should be pretty straight forward.

If I pack blade in cold sand can I torch the tang to soften it enough for drilling post quench?

This one might have been a little ambitious

I'm trying to factor for that. This blade is a direct result of your critique of my first blade and the desire to make a better blade than any person has ever made before.

This one might have been a little ambitious

Making another blade isn't a question. I think I might have an addiction.

Thank you. After chasing tapers all morning finally have them about straight and balance where I want it before heat treat. Fingers crossed it all goes right from here

This one might have been a little ambitious

Before I describe anything I know my photography is not great I'm working with a cell phone under my kitchen lights. This is my second attempt at forging a knife might have been a little ambitious deciding to go with full distal taper and a tapered tang all in one shot. Knife is being...

    I have a moral/ethical question on forging.

While I started this thread with a serious doubt of what I was doing and what I was calling my work, I have enjoyed reading the conversation and getting into people's heads more than I have hearing that people in the business won't look down on another for not doing it the way they do it. This...

    First finished knife.

I'll claim the fault on this. I don't always ask my questions in a clear, concise manner.

    I have a moral/ethical question on forging.

So as the title suggests I have a question. How much grinding can a person do and still call a blade forged? Example and my personal delima: I have forged the blade portion of what will be a puukko'ish style knife. Do I have to draw out the tang to call it forged or can I cut it with a...

    First finished knife.

Thank you I hadn't even thought of over sized holes.
  18. Windom Armory

    First finished knife.

I was more asking about getting the holes perpendicular to the center of the line spine rather than the taper. Since asking the question I have done my best Google-foo and found the answer I was looking for. Thank you for the response and information.

    First finished knife.

Thank you for the input and advice. When you drill the holes for your taper Tang how do you do that it the process is eluding me? The wood was supposed to be bocote as it stated on eBay got eight pairs of scales for twenty bucks shipped. Blade is 1095.
  20. Windom Armory

    First finished knife.

This knife is admittedly quite heavy in the handle. I know the balance point should be right in the ricasso. This knife still moves well. Next time I'll pay more attention to weight and balance.
