What's going on in your shop?

Hello makers. This is my first knife. I got it as a kit, the blade was already finished and all I had to do was attach the bolsters and scales. Any feedback would be appreciated. I have a lot of questions about some things so if anybody has the time to talk please let me know as well. The...

Well, I finished. Please let me know all the things that are wrong with it and what I could potentially do to fix it. All feedback will be appreciated. I plan to post it in the what’s going on in your shop thread as well.

Haha that’s not a problem. A shop that isn’t messy is a shop that’s hardly used, I’d say.

Well here’s my progress so far. The little 1x30 was awesome for sanding out the excess wood on the handle. From there I mostly used files for profiling. I will say this, the rasp does way more damage than I thought it would and ended up taking too much off up by the bolster. I also learned that...

I just looked it up, I’m about 2 hours from you! I’m in Marshall, Michigan, just above the border on I69. We definitely should get together sometime and dick around in the shop. I’ll post my progress so far here in a minute.

I’m not sure if everyone that has posted on this thread will get a notification but I figured I post a little update. I started my first knife today. It’s just a knife kit that already had the knife itself was done and all I had to do was put the bolster and scales on. The grinder was a big help...

    Budget belt grinder

Hey Andy, i appreciate the offer. Part of the reason I’m not going the route of a nicer grinder is the fact that they’re bigger. I need something small that can be put away reasonably because I have a small two car garage as my workspace.

I will do just that, thank you for the info. I did end up getting the cheap grinder, like I said in an earlier reply, no matter what it can be used for other things so if I don’t like it for knife grinding I can move into something nicer. Just didn’t want to shell out $200+ on a nicer grinder if...

    New guy from Michigan

Hello knife dogs! I have already posted in here but figured I’d introduce myself. My names Austin and I’m from southern Michigan. I’ve been watching and reading about knife making for a few years now and after my fiancé got me a knife making kit I figured this was as good a time to give it a...

    Budget belt grinder

That is a very good idea. I’ll have to post in here and see if there’s anyone nearby that I can get in touch with to ask questions and get feedback from. I personally don’t know anybody that makes knives.

Haha as are most of my hobbies. I can definitely see this one being more so because unless I sell them it’s almost all at a loss. But a fun endeavor either way. I am in southern Michigan myself so a bit of a hike but I do appreciate the offer!

    Budget belt grinder

thanks Edward, I appreciate the input. I think at the end of the day, I’m going to get the grinder. It’ll be something that even if I don’t like it for knife making, I can still use it in woodworking projects or when just a little bit of grinding is needed. It’s $60 and I’ve wasted more money on...

    Budget belt grinder

The book is on the way now lol. If I had the funds I’d definitely be going the 2x72 route but alas, I have other things that need doing, like my roof. Figured the 1x30 will get me started and hopefully last awhile until I can upgrade.

    Budget belt grinder

Thanks for the input guys. I was thinking more along the lines of the one in the link below. From the research I did I’ve found that I’ll have to make some modifications to make it work a little better. My plan is to use an angle grinder to rough out the shape of the knife then hand file and use...

    Budget belt grinder

Mostly skinning and camp knives, as hunting is my other main hobby. I’d like to try a filet knife but the blade is so thin that I think it’ll be awhile before I try my hand at that. I’ll look into filing jigs as well. From what I’ve read the biggest drawback to low end grinders is that it’s one...

    Budget belt grinder

Hello new and old dogs! After a couple years I’ve of watching knife making videos by Alec Steele and Red Beard Ops, I’m finally taking the plunge into knife making. Albeit at a slow pace. My fiancé got me a knife making kit for Christmas that I plan to start now that the weather is finally...
