    Custom Leather Stamp?

A makers mark is very important if you want to become a professional for sure. :) Inexpensive advertising, and allowing prospective customers to know who made their sheath if they bought it second hand. Its happened to me on quite a few occasions. The place that made mine does not work with...

    Boot leather scrap for sheaths

Double tanning unites the best features of each tanning method, water resistance and leather stiffness. If you have that thinner 2/3 ounce veggie tanned leather for lining and added stiffness it would be a good idea. I look forward to seeing what you do with em!

    Leatherwork mallet

Not a bad choice at all. :) You will find the hard plastic head much more useful than the soft rubber one. I like the idea that the heads are replaceable as well! That way you can get an extra plastic head for the other side and have a longer life to the tool. I'll have to take a peek at these...

    Boot leather scrap for sheaths

Double Tanned is good, not the best but ok for work. Some of the nicest sheaths I've seen have been made out of boot tops. The stitching is wonderful on some. I've been thinking over some designs using boot tops. I do line them though, 2/3 ounce leather is cheap insurance. EDIT to add, my first...

    Leatherwork mallet

heh! I have some old tools that show signs of being used with a metal hammer. I recon it to rescuing an abused dog, it'll never be the same as intended but its still a good thing. Just keep with the soft mallet and its going to improve with age. :)

    Knives cutting through leather sheaths

Well said Laurence, well said. Your not alone in giving little seminars in sheath working. :) Some are rather put off, some are very thankful.

    Knives cutting through leather sheaths

One thing I have come to discover with letting people handle my knives is that they almost always put them in the sheath either backwards or altogether wrong and end up either nearly hurting themselves or ruining my sheath work. I now watch very closely. People not used to knives in general...

    Boot leather scrap for sheaths

Walt, Dont let anybody convince you that you need top of the line tools and expensive machines to make good sheaths. As with all tools buy the best you can AFFORD. Stress on the word "afford" I've watched too many up and comers go out and buy up all the expensive custom tools and machines only...

    Burnishing

Fascinating, honestly I've not heard of not sanding the edges of a sheath or any leather piece. I've only been doing it since the early '90's so I'm relatively new to the craft. The more layers you have in a stack of leather the more you encounter uneven edges even after they've been cut...

    Clamping leather

I've used both no glue and Chucks way of gluing first and both ways have their place depending on what style your using. If using the Randall Style pouch, the kind that is stitched on both sides then you'll need to keep the top part of the sheath unglued because of the dimensional raise in the...

    Clamping leather

Now, this is my method, and only mine, well, hopefully not. But, I dont clamp my leather work, ever. Its a little more work, but go back to your molding occasionally as it dries and reinforce the molding. Dont over work it though, you'll get that nasty burnished look. As the leather dries it...

A Friendly Reminder About Knife Dogs

This forum is a Drama, Profanity, and Troll free Zone. Even cleverly edited profanity is still profanity, we are all adults and know the difference. There are also a good number of us with children who read along with us. I dont know about everyone, but cuss in front of my child in public...
