    heat treating furnace which one

I notice that everyone goes with the KF series but I saw they also have a KO series which goes to 2400 degrees, as opposed to the 2200 for the KF. Is there any reason that the higher maximum temperature would be needed? I'm thinking if I'm gonna cry, I don't want to ever find out I SHOULD have...

    No Weld Grinder WIP

I originally wasn't going to post this, just because I wasn't sure if it would be allowed since the plans aren't mine. Then I figured if I just skipped measurements I should be ok! I will walk through this as I did, but ignoring some of the boring parts. Such as measuring and drilling all the...

Cheapest knife handle material to use for experience?

Wow, Thanks everyone for the feedback. I actually never thought of trying to locate sources for scrap which I could use. I had originally posted thinking I'd get recommendations on a few wood types that would be okay without stabilization and thus cheaper than things like burl blocks or...

    Propane Forge WIP

I finally had time away from work in order to heat up the forge for the first time. Here are the pictures from the first heat, though I have a few notes since I've tried it a few times since... First observation, the doors definitely help heat it up faster and I'm glad I created them in the...

Cheapest knife handle material to use for experience?

Hey guys, I'm just starting out and know I'll make lots of knives that aren't worth squat and will be thrown out. I was wondering what handle material is cheapest but will still yield the experience I need to develop those skills? I wasn't sure if micarta or G10 could be found in larger sheets...

    Propane Forge WIP

I will take the hard brick under advisement. I assumed at some point I would need to replace bricks and the design allows for this since the crossbars are bolted on and not welded. Why the kaowool over the hard brick? Wouldn't a ceramic coating help reflect the heat more than the blanket?

    Propane Forge WIP

Thanks Josh! I'm in Orlando, over near UCF. Glad to know about the abundance of Floridians here, I am bound to have to buy a few beers so I can watch some of them. I learn visually a lot quicker then reading things.

    Propane Forge WIP

One last change, I didn't mention it because it was during final assembly. I had a few inches of angle iron left over so I cut it in half and attached them to the doors with very very large thread screws I had. I'm sure even Tapcons (screws for concrete) would work. You just want the widest...

    Propane Forge WIP

I didn't take any pictures of the frame assembly. Honestly I wanted it to get done because I was in a rush since my helper was leaving! I decided to use angle iron since it was sturdy and would help hold the bricks together with out needing to use fasteners in the bricks at all. Remember, this...

    Propane Forge WIP

This is my WIP for my forge. With December being such a busy month, I finished assembly but haven't fired it up to dry it out yet (I will explain later). I am planning on doing it tomorrow, and I can post some updated pics at that point. I will include various measurements and why I did what I...

Either someone helped, or there was a system purge since the error is gone now.

    Picture Exceeds limit issue

Hi, I was attempting to load pictures to my album and hit an error: This picture exceeds your total album file-size quota by 57.8 KB. I didn't get a way to delete the pictures, and when checking the album it said no pictures were present. I tried deleting the album and creating a new one...
