    Kiln construction/upgrade?

You have done your research!2thumbs I see no real advantage to the ramp controller in knife making but others may have different opinions on that subject. Its just a nice option, more useful if you play with glass or ceramics. By heavy duty I was referring to industrial type mechanical relays...

    Quench Plates

That sounds like its worth a try to me. Apply some electrical heat sink compound between the plates for best results. I find thinner scraps much more easy to come by.

    Kiln construction/upgrade?

You might want to think about installing a door switch to turn the power off when you open the door just in case. You will also appreciate having a rack that holds the blades in a stand up position. Tracey sells one that does a good job. BY the way a spare TC is a good idea.

    Kiln construction/upgrade?

Sounds like a great deal! But you will need to spend a little more money to get it right. For bare minimum you will need to get a thermocouple (k type $5 maybe), a process controller capable of displaying temps in our target range ($60-$100 Allied electronics Automation direct ), and a heavy...

    Sheath Positioning

I'd like to throw in my two cents for what it is worth. I have not made many sheathes but have found that I will not carry a knive that I need to bend myself over to resheath. Hunters/ skinners I will allow to ride high. On knives with blades up to 5" max I like to see the belt pass about the...

    My bonehead safety mistake.

Glad your OK buddy! I was not so lucky once. Had one poorly clamped in a drill press and if had covered the blade I would not have gotten my 12 stitches in my favorite left hand. Safety first guys we are supposed to be enjoying this stuff!

    Heat forge

If the gas is rolling and combustion is good you probably wont notice the swirl to much but if it is not you will know right away by the multicolored interior at full heat. At least that has been my observation.

    Getting Scales Flat

It can be done If you really want to use a planer you need glue or tape your scales end to end on to a piece of ply wood or other flat board that is wide enough to put a sacrificial board on either side. These boards should be a longer then the length of the scales end to end on the board...

    My daily carry

I have never had one of mine looked at by a pro so be gentle! I made this from ATS34 and the sheath is kydex but it is sewn to keep it compact. G10 scales and 419 Bolsters. It can all be polished a little better but this one is mine. Any way I figured I would see what the pros think so are...

    refractory cement

low and slow I believe it best for any cement product to be allowed to dry slowly for strength and durability. The heat gun is the best way that I have heard yet to cure the stuff though. The Idea is to raise the temp. above the boiling point to drive out the moisture (212 degrees in most...

    Heat forge

Super Swirl Don't underestimate the swirl effect! When I made my first forge the angle of the flame was all wrong. The flame blasted the opposite wall creating one big hot spot. I had to to remount the torch but once I got the flame to roll around the chamber it was a thing of beauty. I...

    Plate quenching

Simple success I tried the plate quench this afternoon. The blade is in the oven now for tempering, well its probably done by now. I think I am hooked this is fast clean and I have only tried the CPM154 a couple times before but I can really see that it is better. And no warp, at least not...

    Shop picture thread.

Heres my disaster! I figured I would post these to make you guys feel better about your shops! I hate the steel stand but it is the only mobile anvil I have seen. I built this forge from scratch because I wanted to teach steel a lesson! Its no NWG but it is solid and works great I...
