    Growlers for Cryo - Recommendations?

If you work with it - What's your recipe for AEB-L? Per L.T's recommendations - I've been Austentizing AEB-L at 1975, plain dry ice (no slurry), and 350 temper 2x2. I average about Rc 62 with that method. I've considered lowering the Tempering to 325 to bump the hardness a bit. Thoughts?

    Growlers for Cryo - Recommendations?

That's what I'm thinking. I suppose one way of saying this: "Is the juice worth the squeeze" - particularly for a non-commercial hobby knife maker? Unless I can see a meaningful difference in using LN, why add more "stuff" to my already cluttered shop? I can see in a commercial world that...

    Growlers for Cryo - Recommendations?

Hey guys, great information, just what I was hoping to hear. I'm not sure what I want to do yet. But, there's a cattle AI outfit nearby and I'll stop over there and see if they have an excess Dewar bottles. If I find one, the neck size will be an issue for the knives I'm making that are in...

    Growlers for Cryo - Recommendations?

Thought I'd post this question to see if any of you have experience with using conventional Growlers (large thermos bottle) to store liquid nitrogen for Cryo treatment. I'm doing a lot of stainless kitchen knives and have been using dry ice. Yesterday I discovered that the welding shop that...

    CarTech Micro-Melt CD#1 Alloy

I agree, it seems to be a bit of a crap shoot. And, these WW items are not refundable.

    CarTech Micro-Melt CD#1 Alloy

I'm curious if anyone has worked with CarTech Micro-Melt CD#1 Alloy that's sold by Alpha Knife Supply? I just purchased a couple pieces of this steel along with an order of AEB-L. AKS does not show this steel in their inventory of carbon and stainless steels, but lists it in the section called...

how to clean up the rust without grinding

I agree and yes, it's a dirty job. There's usually a limit on size in the blast cabinet. Electrolysis can be scaled to match whatever the need, like the mower deck that I cleaned that way. It does require scrubbing the black gunk off for final finish.

    Resp-O-Rator R.I.P.

As a knife maker with a beard, for the past 8 years I've used one of Jim Durxbury's Resp-o-Rators (https://duxterity.com/resp-o-rator/). I've modified the unit to accept 3M filters and replaced the plastic cross arm. This filter has served me well, filtering particulates much better than my 3m...

    Stencils

How do you clean your stencils? I've been spraying Windex on the stencil and then a gentle spray of water until I don't see any gunk in lettering. I've been using Bo Gropitch for my latest stencils.

What to do when the number of knives exceeds quench capacity?

Hum... I knew you guys would come up with some good thoughts. I was beginning to think just pulling them one at a time & quenching would work. But, the temperature will definitely drop each time a knife is pulled. (I wonder how low it would go - need to a test and see how low it goes)...

What to do when the number of knives exceeds quench capacity?

I'm heat treating a number of knives using AEB-L with Alpha Knife Supply's HT recommendations. I want to do them (4 or 5 large blades) as one batch in the oven. Do any of you have experience extending the duration of the last heating hold point of 1975F? AKS recommends holding this last...

    Welding (cheap) Machines

The interweb has a bunch of welder machine recommendations. One of my favorite guys is Jody Collier that has a ton of high quality videos on weldingtipandtricks.com. His advise addresses MIG /Stick and TIG. It boils down to how much you want to spend for the type of welding you'll do. More...

Adding Argon to AEB-L HT Pouch

I'll have go get my WD40 out of the boat. The only thing it'sgood for is spraying on fishing lures... and it works good for that! But I'll give the HT idea a try, that may be the second thing it's good for.

Adding Argon to AEB-L HT Pouch

Good questions. I've never had much decarb on AEB-L. But, depending on whether I used a paper insert (or how much paper), I would get varying degrees of black surface coating. That discoloration would grind off. The Argon gas seems to have eliminated the dark discoloration and added a...
