What's going on in your shop?

Yup. Have mine hooked up to a Dust Deputy and shop vac for wood n such. Just use the water bucket for steel. Sometimes I’ll use a box fan with a furnace filter attached too.

What's going on in your shop?

Nice one John! Looks like that one will have lots of interesting activity. What steel do you find gives you the best results for your process? I'm playing with W-2 right now, but see others get good results with 1075, 1095 and W-1.

What's going on in your shop?

Here’s after sanding to 1200 followed by a series of etching and polishing. It’s hard to get a decent photo. I’m pretty happy with the activity on this one.

What's going on in your shop?

Time for a test etch. I sanded to 220 and cleaned with soap followed by alcohol… And here’s after 10 minutes in the ferric chloride. Now I’ll see what I can get with some more sanding and polishing.

What's going on in your shop?

How thick are the final pieces? I've been wondering if they could be used for guards and spacers. Looks like a lot of fun to do.

What's going on in your shop?

Finished up with a ferric chloride etch, some stingray leather, and a para cord wrap. I’ll have to figure out a kydex sheath for it next.

What's going on in your shop?

Trying something completely new. New profile, new grind. I don’t know if there’s a name for that profile, but I’ve seen it on folders before and it’s really intrigued me. Been told it’s a flat grind vs compound, so that’s how I’m approaching it. Hopefully I won’t screw it up!

Has anyone used Belian Iron wood?

I bet it will polish up nicely. I've used Cumaru (sometimes called Brazilian Teak) on handles before. Pieces came from flooring, so very dense and durable. It was also plain to look at, but finished out beautifully. Give it a try.

Finished up the axe. Now it’s back to knives for a bit.

    Cu mai?

Wouldn't galvanic corrosion be a concern between the copper and steel, especially in a kitchen knife? I do think they look really cool though ;)

What's going on in your shop?

I’m working on another Viking Axe. I cut in the wolf motif with the Dremel. And finished antiquing the blade and blued the engraving. Next up is getting the handle fit.

    Whetstone suggestion?

+1 on the DMT diamond stones. I use a Lansky set up for smaller blades which also works great, but got the DMT diamond stones for larger knives like chef knives. I think I have 600 and 1200 if I remember correctly. Another plus is you can hold them with a magnet, either in hand or in a vise. I...
