    Giraffe bone

I picked some up this year. Von Gruff has a thread on how he processed his that helped me with mine: https://www.knifedogs.com/threads/handle-material.50267/#post-394605 Be warned. It will stink up the whole shop when you cut and work it :)

    I have to brag!

Based on the pic, I'd say he's ready for a KITH. Nice work. What are the specs?

    Hamon thread

I've picked up some W2 and 1095 that I intend to chase some hamons with. There's some very inspiring work online that I've been checking out. Look up Jan Hafinec knives (@janhafinecknives on IG) or Jarred Ball (@jball_knives on IG). They look to have spent a lot of time perfecting their techniques.

    Persian Kard

Beautiful piece John. Is the blade San Mai, or just partially etched? Very cool effect.

    2021 KITH is here.

I'm going to have to bow out for this one. We recently got our layoff notices (plant closes 12/31) and I probably should be looking for a new gig by then ;)

    2021 KITH is here.

I'll need to know the timelines before I can commit. Starting to get backed up with projects.

What's going on in your shop?

Right on. A creative mind has to create, and it’s definitely a creative outlet. I’ve done woodworking, watercolor and acrylic painting, pen and ink illustrations, but there’s just something about working with steel to make a usable tool.

    2021 KITH???

Depending on time frame, I'd be interested.

    Recommended video

Might have to grab that one too. I really enjoyed his 1080/1084 video and learned a lot from it. You can also get it from his website, cashenblades.com.

What's going on in your shop?

This is what has worked for me: 1) Print out the image to transfer (I'm using a laser printer. Other printers may work, but I haven't tried them). 2) Tape the design to the work piece, image side down. 3) Wipe it down with a paper towel moistened with acetone (I've found if it's too wet, it...

What's going on in your shop?

Another Viking axe finished up. I’ve been using @BossDog ’s suggestion for transferring patterns using laser jet print with acetone. It works beautifully! I used it to do the carving on this one’s handle. The next one I have planned will have a very intricate design on the face using this method.

    Makers Mark Stencils Comparison

    Yup. All those things help.

    Makers Mark Stencils Comparison

They can get hot during etching. Also, the fine holes in the material can get clogged up if not cleaned. I know mine are at the end of their life when the edges lose their crispness and start to get kinda hazy.

Working with bronze for a guard

Thanks Ted. That does help. At least I know I didn't pick up something I can't use.

Working with bronze for a guard

I picked up a 1/4" thick piece of "bearing bronze" that I'd like to use for a guard and spacer on a knife project. I haven't worked with bronze yet, and am assuming there are different kinds out there. Will this kind work? I plan on filing and sanding it to shape. Didn't know if it can be cold...

Where To Get New Logo And Stencils

I started out with 2 sizes to use for different size blades. I found that the larger size I originally ordered was too big. Just recently put in a reorder and got a smaller size to use. My stencils are through TUS Technologies. Been very happy with the product. They come as 5 stencils on one...

    Making Test Coupons

They will definitely be harder to break after tempering. To check grain, I've always snapped them before tempering.

What's going on in your shop?

It’s axe grinding day! I’ve got three of these on the bench. Need to finish profiling them. Might get as far as detailing one. Still need to research some designs.

    What about stonewash finish

Here's an idea I've been wanting to try. It uses a 2 X 72 grinder to power a tumbler made from PVC.
