    Mirror Finish?

I know a really smooth high grit finish is required for a good Damascus etch, but didn't realize a mirror finish could help. I will try that on a piece of Damascus. Mirror finish on my next knife? Not sure about that - just like playing around with different stuff.

    Graduation Dagger

A very nice dagger - good job. I really like stabilized Buckeye burl - I wish I had some. I've got LOTS of stabilized Spalted pecan.

KnifeDogs Adjustable Disc Grinders Now Available with Motor & VFD options

Is it a 1hp as in your post? OR, 3/4hp as on the website? Doesn't really matter, either size will work just fine. Let me commend you on a good design - best I've seen yet. So easy to flip from horizontal to vertical and both positions are very useful. I've got both a vertical and horizontal...

    Mirror Finish?

Agreed 100% on mirror finishes. They're only for a safe queen, and I don't do much of those. I make more kitchen type knives than anything and just can't imagine a mirror finish on one of those. It wouldn't be mirror long, and nothing looks crappier than a mirror finish that's all scratched up.

    Mirror Finish?

A short post here on how I got a mirror finish. I did mirror finished years ago, but quickly fell out of love with a mirror finish when I realized how quickly they got scratches and stuff during use. Plus it was fairly time consuming, sand to 1200 grit at least before starting with a buffer...

    Hunter

How many layers in the Damascus? The layers really look good - they tie the whole knife together. Anybody would be PROUD to own that knife. Well done

I am up against the limits of my capabilities

Bob, I didn't get any good photos of the blade after I sharpened that shows the bevel very well at all. I didn't do any "re-shaping" at all - just a sharpening following the original bevel. We'll let Wallace chime in once he gets the knife back. USPS shows Sat as planned delivery.

    Grit Size Equivalents

It's a shame Trizact didn't just use the actual micron size for their belts as close as the are. Sure would have simplified things. Even better would have been just use the normal sandpaper belt grits.

I am up against the limits of my capabilities

Well, it looks like you can send emails to me, but I can't send to you, unless my emails go to your spam folder. I'll look forward to getting a tracking number so I'll have an idea when to expect the package. I'll turn it around in a couple (or 3) days back to you. Ken H>

I am up against the limits of my capabilities

FFG - Full Flat Grind where the bevel is flat from the cutting edge to the spine. Normally take edge down to .010" or so for a EDC, then sharpen from there. For a fine cutting kitchen knife might even take the edge down to .004" or so, almost to a sharp edge before final sharpening. BTW, did...

    Small forced Burner

This is the one you're talking about? https://a.co/d/3mhcCS0 Look at the little square with up arrow just to the left of AC Blower. Click that and look at bottom of popup and it will give a short link making it easy to link to. I rigged up one using that type of blower and amazing how well it...

I am up against the limits of my capabilities

Wallace, I would be more than happy to help "IF" I felt comfortable in my skills (no charge of course). My thought would be a FFG which I normally use and don't see any reason it wouldn't sharpen with that. 3/16"is a pretty thick blade for a small knife like that. Any idea what Rc the blade...

Good looking knife - that rosewood handle really pops. Have you considered a full flat grind? What metal did you use?

That is interesting - the small blade folds down INSIDE the larger blade? I've never seen anything like that.

    Etching Damascus

I picked up the qt of sulfuric acid for batteries. This image is zoomed in too much, but can't get it right with cropping, etc. This is about 20 minutes in full strength battery acid. Took it out around 10 min and lightly sanded with 800 grit, then back in for another 10 minutes. It looks...

    Etching Damascus

Good questions - I've etched Damascus the same way you do, but after seeing that video with the Indian knifemakers (lockbacks?) using sulfuric acid to etch with I've been wondering myself. Get some battery acid (which is around 30% sulfuric acid), but not sure how strong the acid needs to be...

I have no idea what wood it is, but sure looks like it would make nice handles.... and the heart wood not even need stabilizing.
