    Bearing replacement on old lathe

This lathe, a drill press, and a bandsaw are the extent of my “machining tools”. Things like line boring, etc would all have to be hired out. I don’t even know how I would get it to a machine shop lol. I’m not doing anything that would be considered very precise, so I’m hoping to get it close. I...

    Bearing replacement on old lathe

I thought about adding it but it would be so thin that I don’t think it would work well. I’ve already broken up the old ones beyond any hope of saving now, so I “have to” replace them now lol

    Bearing replacement on old lathe

Got the spindle out today, after checking the bearings with Plastigage. I don’t know what that spindle weighs, but it’s a lot. I could barely lift it. Now I gotta get to cast in place Babbitt bearings out. They are super bad lol. They are oval by about .032”. Now wonder this thing broke tooling...

    Cable damascus

Yeah I didn’t think of that! Probably would do the same thing basically. There is a lot of cool ways you can weld and manipulate it, it’s an awesome thing to work with. Fun stuff

    Cable damascus

Oh man I love some cable! I have to check out that guy and see if he has more lol. 1.5 inch is hard to find. I learned from an older local knife smith, and he taught me to put it on the anvil step, and hammer it “into” the step at an angle, while rotating it counterclockwise. Prep is just...

    Hello All.

Howdy! Good to have a machine tool rebuilder on here:)! I just started tearing apart an old Flather lathe. I never knew how much I didn’t know lol.

I checked out his videos and subscribed. I can learn a LOT from that dude! Thanks

    Bearing replacement on old lathe

Oh, they are poured in place. I just thought they would come out easily. I’m mostly planning to use this for center drilling round bars of bronze, so I can cut them into rings I can then forge into sheath parts. I just need it better than “eyeballing” center best I can on my drill press lol...

    Bearing replacement on old lathe

I’ll have to see if I can get some Plastigage tomorrow. Definitely would make things easier

A Tool That's Just About Eliminated Hand Sanding...almost!

Just about eliminated hand sanding? Come on now, where is the fun in that! I might have to get one of those.

Hello, new and young knife smith.

Nice work! That grind is not as easy as it looks. Really well done.

That looks very nice! Is that the pine?

    OPauls Knife Picture Thread

This will be interesting to see. I’ve been thinking about trying pine, if I find some with some grain or something. That has a really nice color.

    Bearing replacement on old lathe

Here is the bearing and top cap. I did try to get the bearing loose with a small hammer and a scrap aluminum chisel. That thing will not budge! I thought it would just pop out, like a crank bearing on an engine, but that suckers pretty tight. I’ll read some internet stuff on it tonight. Might...

    Bearing replacement on old lathe

Had some time to mess with this today. Cleaned up the shaft, and it looks a lot better than I initially thought. It wasn’t galling I saw, it was just babbit goo. There is one groove in the shaft, very faint, but it is a continuous spiral, which makes me think it wasn’t worn in, but machined on...

    Bearing replacement on old lathe

I’ve pulled one bearing cap. The shaft looks “not good” for lack of better term. It does look like there were actually 4 bearing faces, but they are terribly worn on the bearing, I can’t tell if there was intended to be 4 or 2, and as it got sloppy it just started to wear the other side. I see...

Mine too lol. That’s why I gotta ask :)

    Bearing replacement on old lathe

It does appear to have thrust surfaces, but I can’t tell yet if they are “in addition to” the bearing, or just the thickness of the bearing wearing on the shaft face. I don’t want to touch it till I get some rubber gloves. I’m sure the silver colored lead paste all over it isn’t something I want...

    Bearing replacement on old lathe

That’s what I’m hoping to do. I did take one cap off, and they do have babbit bearings. I’m considering figuring out how thick the original bearing was, and making new ones using bronze sheet, and then carving grease channels into it. I know there has to be a way. I think it would be a...

    Bearing replacement on old lathe

Thank you. I did pull a cap. It does appear to be babbit.
