Anyone care to critique my maker's mark?

Thanks for the comments Bruce. The shape of the knife in the original image was just a rough sketch (I was getting free time from a neighbor who's a graphic design guy and is really busy with a couple of kids, so I didn't want to waste a lot of his time on a first draft.). That being said, the...

Etching a blade with a patina

I'm new to this etching thing. If I wanted to retroactively mark blades that I'd previously put into service and that had already picked up a patina, can I just clean them with a solvent and etch them, or do I need to abrade away the patina to expose fresh metal prior to etching? thanks -Kurt

Anyone care to critique my maker's mark?

Thanks again for all the input and suggestions. Here's a picture of the first knife that bears my maker's mark. It's for my mom, she broke a favorite paring knife a while back and I said I'd make one to replace it. It's O-1, HRC 62, 600 grit hand sanded finish. Scales are paduk with 416 SS...

    Questions about makers mark

I posed a similar question just last week. While I was inquiring about an etched mark, I think some of the content of the discussion is relevant to a stamped mark as well. Hope this link works. -Kurt http://knifedogs.com/showthread.php?39771-Anyone-care-to-critique-my-maker-s-mark

    edge retention testing

Thanks, my first knee jerk reaction was just that, use it for its intended purpose, that's as real-world as it gets, but that also makes the testing more subjective. I was just wondering if there were some standardized methods that might be more objective and comparative. -Kurt

    edge retention testing

I'll just lob this out there and keep it wide open. What do you guys do, or recommend, as a testing routine for edge retention? I realize that the kind of knife under test will affect the answer, so please qualify responses by identifying the type of knife associated with specific testing...

Anyone care to critique my maker's mark?

Thanks for all the sound advice everybody. You've convinced me to keep things simple and just use my name. I just need to find a font that I like and is conducive to stenciling. -Kurt

Anyone care to critique my maker's mark?

No offense at all. I'm a design engineer by trade and am a firm believer in the KISS principle, form follows function,,, Marketing never agrees! One thing I have been wondering about is that are these "Name, City, State" guidelines still as relevant as they were when those who penned them did...

Anyone care to critique my maker's mark?

After hearing the feedback to scale back to just the name, I did think about using the knife profile as the vertical leg of the K. Might just do that, haven't had time to digest all the feedback, just yet, so it's still fluid. Western WI, hmmm, Hudson, Somerset, St. Croix Falls, New...

Anyone care to critique my maker's mark?

Thanks for the input everybody! I do have to say I'm surprised that the consensus is "just the name". The reason I tried to take some creative liberty with the mark is that, well, frankly, I'm nobody, and I thought that a little flair would stand out more memorably than "Smith" or "Jones"...

Anyone care to critique my maker's mark?

Thanks Laurence, the fine lines on some of the text is a concern of mine as well and hoped that Ernie or any other stencil maker for that matter, would be able to advise as to whether they thought it might be a problem. I wanted to pick your collective brains for general concept before sending...

Anyone care to critique my maker's mark?

Thanks everybody, I especially appreciate the time and effort it takes to post a detailed response. I almost expected to get the "lose the state" feedback. I tapped my neighbor to make a minor modification but didn't bother him with a search for an alternate font,,, house full of kids +...

Anyone care to critique my maker's mark?

I posted this on BF too, but thought I'd broaden my audience and post here too. I've been meaning to get to this for quite some time and this morning had the opportunity to get some help from a neighbor who works with Adobe Illustrator. I've paid attention to the comments I've seen in other...

    Dust collection

I took my dust collection a bit further for a couple of reasons,,, safety, not wanting to get sparks in contact with any dust and to keep abrasive dust off of my lumber and woodworking equipment. My shop is a woodshop first, knife shop second. I don't have any pictures, but can add some...
