Even with stock removal I don't bother with the flat ground stuff. Since I do mostly Full Flat Grinds on blades nothing is really gained with flat ground steel. There really isn't any bark" on AEB-L anyway.

On stabilized wood and some natural wood like Rosewood that's the way I do most handles. Sand to 1200 to 2,000 grit, then finish on buffer with really fine rouge.

I'd sure be interested to see the ingredients - perhaps it's just premixed FeCl? Maybe somebody has used it and will chime in.

That Coal Iron press works pretty darn good for a 9 ton press doesn't it? Assuming it's still got the stock 3" cylinder installed? I upgraded my Coal Iron press to a 4" cylinder so I could get an honest 12 ton from it.

I never put pins in kitchen knives with hidden tangs. With epoxy and perhaps a few notches in the tang it will never come off without busting the wooden handle. Your wife is going to LOVE that knife.

I'd say it's a good deal - it's already got the Quick Change tool post added and a full set of insert holders. Variable speed it looks like. The lathe itself is perhaps in the $400 to $600 range, then the extra tooling. Go for it - you'll be surprised at all the uses you'll find for it

I think you've found a solution - I sorta like the left scale better, but both work. Just adds character to the scale. I think the finer filler is better (for me), rather than sawdust, perhaps sanding dust for a finer grain?

Brock, what marking fluid do you use? Have you tried paint as marking fluid?

In the first image, the right most scale the grub worm holes show up nicely. I've got lots of spalted pecan the same way. After I stabilized the grub worm is pretty solid and polishes up pretty good. Osage Orange isn't going to need stabilizing, so test one scale by soaking with a good thin...
