    First welding machine

I have a mig non-gas unit that uses flux core wire and it definitely doesn't have the cleanest welds. You can grind off the "splatters" and it's a little less trouble/expense than having gas.

What's going on in your shop?

I tape my blades for sharpening. I use the Ken Onion Worksharp and if you don't tape you will get small scratches. The thing works great but it can scratch a blade

Lol, Minecraft is a kids video game. Though also played by adults. Maybe ask your kids/grandkids.

    I am an idiot!

Yeah, no need to peen on wood. In fact, if a pin is too tight on wood scales it will cause the wood to crack later (ask me how I know! ruined a beautiful set of amboyna scales). Now I have the pins so they can easily slide in holes through both sides. Then lotsa epoxy!

    Problem with Electro Etching?

If it's coming back then I would definitely neutralize after you are done etching, lightly sand, and then oil. I've done the saltwater and homemade etcher and they work just fine. But you have to stop the etching process and it sounds like it is continuing. Not to get into debate over makers...

    Problem with Electro Etching?

Tape your stencil tight to the blade and use less etching fluid. The pad on the electrode only needs to be damp, if its dripping wet then too much fluid will get behind the stencil and will etch. Some staining is normal behind the stencil (very light) and can be sanded off with 800 or 1500 grit.

What's going on in your shop?

Yep, I have the same setup but I ran a tube down to the bucket (metal stove pipe) to keep the dust from "wandering". Does what I need. The only downside is when I drop a bolster pin or whatever and it lands in the bucket. The single biggest dust "helper" I've got is the Fasco blower fan I have...

The Most Dangerous Thing in MY Shop...

Another vote for the buffer. I've had it grab things even when I'm being careful. Hate the dang thing

    That Was Stupid

@Randy Lucius wanted to thank you for the "Etching Recipe". Etched some ABS from a big billet I bought awhile back and it turned out great!

What's going on in your shop?

Mokume Gane is cool to make and easy with quarters. Those rain drops turned out great! My next attempt I'm going to try and get some brass mixed in with the quarters. It's tricky though as the brass melts at a lower temp. Gotta get my thermocouple working today.

What's going on in your shop?

Looks good! It's fun when the metal squirts out and heads towards your leg or some other undesired location! The other downside to that is it can leave you with voids in the mokume, which lead to other bad things.

    Shields and Maker's Marks

in regards to makers marks, it is a good idea to use your name and not just a logo. You want people to be able to find you and doing a google search with a picture isn't going to work as well as if you have a name to look for.

    Damascus bolsters

Bolsters are gonna be tough with Damascus. Getting the pins to "blend" like you can with brass/ss won't work. You could do hidden pins. That involves drill holes in the backs of the bolsters, hollowing out an area in the holes, and then using a brass pin that's just a little longer you compress...

    Cake knife for our anniversary.

    Chris Staniar Photo Gallery

Last one for now. Son's 16th Birthday Bowie I like using the Gemsbok fur as a base for photos, but the reflections it puts on stuff is a pain. The guard shows funny marks that aren't there in real life.
