AEB-L - When do you remove it from foil?

I'm just starting to work with AEB-L. Yesterday I ran test coupons to dial in my temps. I'm getting 62 hrc with just freezer cryo right now. I may move up to dry ice and see how much more I can get out of it. My question today is when do most folks remove the blade from the foil packet? After...

    Heikkila Picture Gallery

This was a commission piece. Customer asked for something with an “elven” design. Blade is 10” of W-2 steel. Handle is figured walnut with bronze guard and spacer. Sheath is tooled leather with a sharkskin frog.

What's going on in your shop?

Working on a sheath today. A new design for me - using a stud and frog to attach to the belt. First time working with shark leather too. I love the texture of it. Just need to sort out a few last bits on how I’m going to put it all together.

    Sheath Stitching

    Was thinking the same thing.

What's going on in your shop?

Finished up the “Elven” knife. Had to abandon the original inlay idea I had for the handle. Next up, I need to do more sheath design research and figure out what materials I want to use. So hard to photograph a hamon. I’ll have to try an indoor set up and see if I can do better.

Sharpening a Knife with a Belly (Inside Curve)

I've used the slack belt above the platen and a Lansky system. For that big recurve, I'll probably try a 1" scalloped j-flex I have and see if that works better.

    Stag Finishing

I've been experimenting with dying giraffe bone. I've used leather dye, Rit dye, Keda dye and Minwax stain. I may have to try some Potassium Permanganate on it too.

    Stag Finishing

I was going to say potassium permanganate too. It looks like it might be jigged bone too. Whatever it is, I love the look.

What's going on in your shop?

Before and after the quench. Excited to see how this one comes out. It’s always a surprise because it never looks how I think it will.

What's going on in your shop?

9 inch blade, almost 10 to the guard. Probably 15-16” overall.

What's going on in your shop?

Draw filing and more sanding. That’s what’s on the menu today. I may get to heat treating before I call it a day. Going to clay this one up too.

What's going on in your shop?

The bottom one is where I’m leaning. I think I want to shorten the ricasso a bit more.

What's going on in your shop?

Been working out a design for a commission piece. Customer asked for an “elven” blade (think Lord of the Rings). Going for an elongated Bowie/Persian thing. Also want to try some inlay on the handle. Any thoughts or critiques welcome. Hoping to finalize it this weekend. Blade steel will be 3/16”...

Here’s a kitchen set I just finished up. 15n20 steel and some nice curly Koa.

Question re: Copper liners on Carbon Fiber.

Does anyone worry about galvanic corrosion when choosing handle materials, or does the epoxy provide enough insulation to prevent it? Something I've wondered about when using dissimilar materials in handles. As an example, in aviation, you never use aluminum washers or fasteners with carbon...
