    Knife Maker Web Sites

while my pricing can change significantly depending on options (mostly handle material) all of the knives pictured on my site have a blurb giving specifics (steel, handle, length) and a price for a similar piece now obviously if they see a micarta handled bowie and want me to make the same...

    Please critique my practice grind

looks good, you seem to be a little to gentle with your plunges, worse on the left hand than the right (assuming your grinding edge up) the clip and secondary bevel came out very nicely

    New poster

if it's a carbon steel (10XX series, 5160/52100, O1, W1/W2) you can get a REALLY good look with cold blue and regular French's mustard. mix 1/4 cup of mustard with a couple Tbsp of cold blue solution dab it onto the fully polished blade surface with a cotton ball (pretty randomly) let it dry...

Thanks Bruce, That is EASILY the nicest taper I've ever used, and in the top 10 I've ever seen. the shallow surface cracks gave it a really great look

    Micarta

I sand to 600 and buff, works great if you want a more textured finish - sand to 80 and spray it with wd40

    Knife handle question

IMNSHO they are highly toxic to ALL people and can cause an allergic reaction in some people. as a rule I wear a respirator for ANY grinder activity (except the final sharpening) and will also wear the respirator when hand sanding on wood / micarta don't forget that Micarta dust in the...

    grinding belts

that's true, Pops has great service and I order from him occasionally, but I've found that I don't like his belt selection as much as Tracys. they just rep different manufacturers and I like the Blaze belts more than the Cubitron belts.

    Mosaic Can bulged

It's not gas that's bulging the end, it's the mass of the end cap steel having to go somewhere. perfectly normal carry on

    grinding belts

I've found Tracy www.usaknifemaker.com to have consistently the BEST prices on Blaze belts. I've tried every high quality ceramic belt there is, the cubitrons, the zirconias, etc, I still come back to the Blaze as my favorite belt.

How long to keep a knife

Given that situation I would VERY much agree with you. My comment was based on a new maker that had not sold more than 2-3 knives.

How long to keep a knife

Personally I've not had a knife like that yet if I did it think one of my brothers or my father/father in law would get a nifty present. after a year or two I would find someone to give it to mostly because I would just get tired of looking at the damn thing

How long to keep a knife

I don't know about "ever" when your first starting out and don't have a good idea of what the value of your work should be, don't be to proud to lower prices slowly to find an appropriate spot. For instance: Joe Maker makes his first Slab handled hunting knife with a 4 inch blade, 5160...
