how to tell vegetable tanned from chrome salt tanned leather

Good to hear that its veggie tanned! The odd thing is that it seems to be different, I wonder whats up? What is the grade mark? ie #1 - #3 That could help identify the leather.

Parafin for Wateproofing a Leather Sheath?

I either use Feibings "Leather Balm With Atom Wax", or Tan Kote. The Leather Balm is the most used, I rarely use the Tan Kote unless specifically requested. I've never hot dipped leather, its just counter intuitive to me. Heat hurts leather.

    Where to buy leather?

To quote a good friend of mine "Tandy has been berry berry good to me"

    fixing a small problem

Fantastic! I'm happy it all worked out. :) Though a thinner welt wont have an effect on how the knife fits in the sheath, rather its how tight you wrap the sheath around the knife. With a pouch sheath is easy to wrap the sheath around the knife and mark where to trim the excess leather. I...

    fixing a small problem

A good rule of thumb for welting is use a piece that is at least as thick as the spine of the knife, or no thinner than 1/8" if the knife is very thin. On the stitching, if you start at the tip run the stitching all the way up to the last two or so holes not to be used. Then use the thread on...

    fixing a small problem

Its hard to tell in the small pic, but it looks like you went one hole too far after that bend in the stitching row at the top. I'd simply re stitch the sheath and not use the last couple of holes, or us a faux stitch and simple run the thread on either side and not through so your holes dont...

    What are they called?

The "washer" described by Tandy is really more like a rivet and its really quite difficult to force it into place, its a Very tight fit. No worries on it coming apart.

    What are they called?

The older definition of a "frog" is the rig used to attach the sheath to the belt utilizing the stud or some similar device. This goes back to the medieval times. Essentially its the rig that stays on the belt and allows the scabbard, or sheath, to be removed without removing the belt. Once...

how to tell vegetable tanned from chrome salt tanned leather

Good to see you finally heard from that supplier! I'm glad they at least they know what they're selling, most do not. The reviews I have seen for Landwerlen were good, too bad they're so far away, I'd love to browse an old fashioned store like that. :) The prices you saw at Tandy are full...

    What are they called?

Here's another example of Sam Brown studs at work: I really like them for certain applications, they really give a nice rustic look to a sheath. :)

Mystery leather is like that mystery meat in the school cafeteria, best just to avoid it altogether.

how to tell vegetable tanned from chrome salt tanned leather

I grew up in Pampa Texas, right in the middle of cattle country, when the wind was just right, we could tell it was the smell of money. 2thumbs One particularly interesting feed lot smelled like pop corn, it was near our Boy Scout camp, I never did get to go there to see why.

how to tell vegetable tanned from chrome salt tanned leather

Good thread! Chrome tanned leather is usually very soft and floppy, while veggie tanned leather tends to be somewhat stiff. More often than not, chrome tanned leather will be pre colored and finished. Beware some "oil tanned" leathers as quite a few of them are really chrome tanned and oil...

    Hammer tapered vs straight?

In wood carving I use a tapered maul, but I haven't heard of one used in leather work. I have a maul that has been modified for leather work, its more cylindrical and very heavy, its good for making large impressions in one hit, or for cutting strap ends. In wood carving and leather work...
