Whether to make a knife for a Marine

Alright, I have got both of them through heat treatment and have ground and tested one of them. Some results which are confusing, hoping to get some thoughts. First off, this is my first time using Nitro V, though its sister AEB-L has become one of my primary steels. I austenitized at 1920 for...

    Looking for knife steel

Not sure about prices at the moment, but I like New Jersey Steel Baron. Here is a good list of suppliers as well: https://knifedogs.com/threads/knifemaking-supply-stores-and-catalogs.8003/#post-426261.

    CPM MagnaCut Stencils

Those are cool. I'd like to try Magnacut, but will probably wait until it drops from hype/high demand prices to market prices.

    2x72 36 Grit belts

I don't know, but I would think it is because there is more ceramic on them.

    Dust collector or box fan?

I definitely need to clean the filter on mine.

    Dust collector or box fan?

Thanks guys, I'm planning on doing a box fan. I have been using a shop vac, but it hasn't been cutting it for me.

    Dust collector or box fan?

I am needing some sort of air filtration system, but am unsure whether a dust collector, air filter, box fan, or squirrel cage filter would be best for my shop. Will be using it to blow away micarta fumes and suck in dust at the grinder. Probably don't need it anywhere other than at the grinder...

    Dressed Up Folder

Everything is immaculate! What I can't stop thinking is how clean that micarta is.

Whether to make a knife for a Marine

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm not sure if he is active duty or not, but will assume he is. I usually make really hard and thin slicers, so if the order goes through it will be good to make and test some knives that are meant to take a beating. Vglegski: Survivabilty, yes, I'll probably be...

Whether to make a knife for a Marine

I've recently been contacted by a mother asking about a knife for her son who is in the marines. I've never made a knife for military or many "tactical" knives so, on the one hand, I don't have any experience with this. On the other hand, looking at the issued knives and what people seem to...

Most recent. My first Shepherd pattern in handrubbed and aggressively stonewashed AEB-L (which the camera didn't pick up), and burnt orange micarta. I'm having problems with this problems with this micarta either having inclusions or tearing out, which is weird. Another Shepherd (for me!) in...

    Quick easy Hamon

Mr. Lewis was kind enough to share his process with us. If it works for him, it works for him. I honestly don't know whether his techniques are the best in theory or not, but let's not butt ourselves into someplace we have no business being. (What I mean to say is, let's keep it respectful...

This is the only knife I've finished for a while, been getting a lot through heat treat. I'll probably keep a few heat treated blanks on hand for quicker custom orders, so I should be able to finish up a couple of them soon. Also, I really, really like the pinch slot. I drilled and filed it out...

    Bearings for platen wheel

Thanks for the replies! If I do end up experimenting with both a 10 and 1 dollar bearing, I will try to remember to post findings.

    Bearings for platen wheel

I need to replace the bearing on one of my tracking wheels. Found these, look to be the same as KMG's but are ten times cheaper. Am I missing anything, or are these the type needed? https://beaumontmetalworks.com/product/r8-bearing/ https://pgnbearings.com/collections/r-series/products/r8-2rs

Smart idea. What grit are your bevels and do you have problems with cracking?

    Between the pins

On softer, lighter colored, or porous materials you are more likely to have that problem or the steel tang dust getting into it. For me, I use fresh abrasives and don't have much of a problem. I think some people use wd40 to keep the dust out?

What's going on in your shop?

Very nice! What is the middle handle material, some sort of stone laminate?
