Pics of knives I've made and WIP

I'll post along the process of my pilot knife. I haven't started grinding the grind yet, or making the guard or making the 1" brass hexagonal pommel. I am also in the middle of getting my old South Bend Turret lathe wired back up and getting it running. It hasn't ran in about 15 years.

Pics of knives I've made and WIP

This is just going to be a picture thread, and a place to throw up some pictures of knives I'm working on. This was my first knife to get my new stamp, I made about four months ago. Untitled by redmech, on Flickr Here is one I still need to seal and epoxy the handle. 5/32" O1 with...

$1000 budget grinder for part timer

Justin, I've been watching your progress here. I'm a newer maker as well. I'm an hour south of KC in Butler MO. I'm using the Grizzly. It's about the cheapest turn key 2 x 72. It for sure has it's limitations. But if you'd like to check it out, your welcome to come give it a whirl some weekend...

Congrats Mud, I know you've got a lot of work and time and preparation in these. They look great. What steel are these first two, O1 and A2?

Taking the dive into knife making

I've never made any scandis. Just flat or convex grind, and I use a plunge guide. May help you out. I'm using a flat platen, are you using a rotary platen? I guess a plunge guide would work just the same on that. My first one I used, I made out of mild steel and it worked just fine.

Taking the dive into knife making

Everything looks to be coming along nicely. I've found out, it doesn't matter how nice you want your plunge or grind lines, no matter how hard you try to get them right, experience and repetition is what the answer is in the end. I have no idea about the hardened A2 grinding easier than O1...

    Plunge lines

Agreed, I've messed up a few blades where I didn't care to finish them after putting nasty scratches past my desired grind lines. The tape could for sure give something to slow that down, and perhaps feel it happening. Great idea.

    Plunge lines

I'm a new guy in knife making. One of my biggest challenges is to have a nice deep grind. With 5/32" blade stock and a blade 1 1/8" wide. If I want my grind 1" tall, I find it takes a lot of practice to get a clean straight grind line. The less of an angle/ taller grind line, the tougher it is...

first knife fresh off my new belt grider

Knife looks great. Your friend looks like he made you quite the grinder. Never have seen one built with an angle grinder. I'll be interested if the angle grinder holds out long. Good use of what you have around though.
