    Aluminum Bronze for guards?

Years ago I made parts out of Aluminum Bronze. As I recall it was miserable to cut/machine...but polished up good. Was more silvery colored than brass...was MUCH stronger than brass. And, had no lead in it like most of the free machining brasses out there. Should be a step up over brass in...

Stamp for my sheath maker's wife....

My friend Mark is an excellent sheath maker. I made his original stamp some years back...(he makes my sheaths) His wife had him show her how to sew and work the leather...she designed some totes and has been using his makers mark which is on the masculine side. She asked if I could make her one...

    Short Bowie progress

Here's the first iteration of the short Bowie I'm working on. I have changed a lot.... The angled guard will be squared up as I don't have the energy to make everything a trigonometry problem. This blade shows more belly out at the tip than as designed because of my many practice runs on finish...

how is 304 SS for polishing?

In changing my Bowie design my guard will be different than the 303 that I bought. I can buy 304 cheaper but was wondering how it buffs, etc. I know it will not mill as easy as 303...but is enough cheaper to be worth it.

    Starting over x3....sigh

So I am on the third (maybe fourth...) revision of the short Bowie I am making. I've learned a ton (mostly...don't try that Ted...) But I am fighting a bit of discouragement. A small setback right now in the shop is a huge set back to me right now as I just do not accomplish much it seems. Lungs...

    Talcum powder substitute?

The dollar store near me no longer carries talc only...it is all medicated now...and a lot is corn starch. What can I use in the furnace to keep steel from sticking together? I don't feel like experimenting with menthol, or aloe, corn starch, etc... Shoulda bought all they had...when the had it...

    Normalizing A-2 ?

I know this has been discussed...I had asked Kevin Cashen in someone's HT thread and I know he gave a time and temp. The Carpenter Steel document does not recommend normalizing A-2 so no data there. But I am using flat ground stock (not forging...stock removal) and want to do a couple...

Almost back in the shop...with a new design.

I'm slowly recuperating from lung surgery, a stent, and a quad bypass....Going nuts as up until this week not able to work in the shop. I started design this a couple months or so ago. Kinda a combining of 3 different designs... As I still have more bad days than good ones I was not too sure...

    New bowie design..

Here's my latest design of a 13.2" bowie...1 3/4 tall. 1/4 thick material. There's still a few areas that I'll tweak...dunno if this one will be made for the KITH. I wish I could jump on this now but have to do some hunters first...I might ditch the middle pin to leave room for checkering...not...

    KITH 2019 (Gene...hunter or fighter?)

When I saw the knives Gene Kimmi was making for KITH I was impressed by his wip! When I was paired up with him I was both delighted and dismayed. It didn't seem right trading one of those Bowies for my lil' edc... So I started sketchin'....... I knew I wanted to do a framed handle with the...

    Magazine Ad?

Have any of you ever placed a magazine ad for your knives? If so how did it work? Was the expense worth the yield? Have any of you run ads that were in a mag for a year or so? I'm starting a fresh batch of 50 blades and when I have them "handled" I would like to think about placing a small ad...
