I know of Donald Bell(Bell Knives), and Peter Wile, but that's about it.
Are there others I'm unaware of?
I'd love to get in touch with just such a "seasoned pro", open a portal to the inner sanctum of Canadian Maritime knife making, and maybe gleen a tip or two.
Any thoughts would be...
.....the wood. Anyone know anything about this stuff?
I've had a nice block of this wood for some time now and just cut/cleaned it up a bit(I'd post a pic if I had batteries). Lovely red/brown color, a bit of figure, and likely the heaviest, hardest wood I've ever held. Absolutely incredible...
I'm building a small forge according to Larry Zoeller's plans, These plans call for 1/8"x4" schedule 60 black pipe nipple" as part of the burner assembly.
I can't find sched 80 pipe anywhere around here.
Is there a proper substitute for this pipe in this application...
The news story and grainy video yell the story.
To Nodar's family, friends, teammates and countryman, go the deepest sympathy and heart felt condolences following this horrific accident.

Here's the latest:
"Caper" is how us local yocals here refer to ourselves. "Scandi".... well I'm sure you all know this one!
So..... I decided to have a go at my version of a Scandi knife with a bit of Cape Breton influence. This is my first attempt at a traditional scandi sheath with a...
I've been searching, fruitlessly, for a tutorial on how these sheaths are made. I'm particularly interested in the process of how the inside cavity for the blade is shaped.
Any thoughts, links, or such would be greatly appreciated.
A client has sent me two camp-kitchen knife blades to which he wants handles and "sheaths" made. I have been given "free reign" on design and materials. To my surprise, both knives arrived with bolster attached, ground and polished.
While the bolsters wouldn't look to bad if done a bit better...
Some of you my remember that I had submitted six recently completed knives to a jury for review in consideration of accepting my work into one of Cape Breton's finest galleries.

This is a sheath I just finished for a large bowie.
The slabs are of "Waterfall Bubinga.
The inlay on the front is Yellow Birch root burl.
The inlay in the back is a leather wear pad also stitched in.
It has a full leather welt sanded down to get a perfect, snug grip on the blade.
The full...
Big, Bubinga, Birch, and Brass.... Camp Bowie.
This knife and sheath incorporate beautiful pieces of a Yellow Birch root burl harvested from the birch groves lining the shores of Chance Harbor outside Pictou Nova Scotia.
Here's a few specs:

..... How are they attached to the leather sheath?
..... What gage or thickness is the metal?

I'm speaking of these:
(I hope Mr. Fuegen doesn't mind the use of his work as my example.)
Just returned from a short photo shoot. We have just endured a rather fine storm that battered the Atlantic coast with 60-100 mph winds, heavy snow and rain, and VERY high tides.
Thought I'd share what I saw. I think to really appreciate how high these tides have been would require living...
Just finished.
I had to do a bit of last minute blade touch up to remove an errant scratch, but it turned out fine (the Mobile 1 oil trick really does work!!). This is the last of 7 knives I'll be submitting on Monday to an art/craft gallery jury for an admission appraisal.
I'm quite happy...

This is a bit Off Topic, but it is vaguely related to knife making.
I have a woodworker friend who is designing a small chest of drawers to include curved steel legs made from rod stock. He wants to "color" the steel using heat.... deep blue is what he's after.
Is this possible?
