Ceramic tile to keep flux from messing up my forge?

Im going to start forge welding in my 3 burner gas forge. The manufacturer suggests using a piece of ceramic tile on the bottom of the forge to keep any flux from gumming up the brick lining. What do you vets think about that? Better suggestion? Thanks!

So,I was looking to purchase a contact wheel, 10 to 14inches, to help with some handle shapng as well as trying my hand at some hollow grinding, and just because I want one. I have a kmg grinder, and kmg sells wheels for it but they are very expensive. I've found some other sites selling...

    Looking for constructive criticism please.

First off, please don't take my request for criticism to just be an a-hole. Please use some tact if possible. But I'm really enjoying making these lockback folders. I really have the function down, even my peening has gotten really good. But I guess I'm wondering if there is something to...

    First lockback folder.

I wanted to make one of these for a while since I've done some slipjoints. I have to say I like these lockbacks much better. Copper liners and bolsters , wooly mammoth tooth scales. This is also the first time I peened my pins. Sent from my XT1565 using Tapatalk

    Respirator recommendations

I've been using a 3m respirator for a while. Last night I used a cut off wheel, outside, to cut some kitchen knives out of a sheet of steel. I wore all my eye and breathing protection. But later that night I still had black crap coming out of my nose. I obviously need better protection...

    Making a corkscrew. Question

I was curious as to what thickness and type of steel I should use to make a corkscrew. Also what hardness would be recommended? I figured a tool steel would be fine, but I'd like to only make a small pile of bad corkscrews before I am successful! I know buying one is easier. But I had a...

First hidden tang and some special Damascus.

So, I recently inherited my grandfather's workbench. He was a career machinist. This bench has been living at my grandfather's home, he passed away years ago, and the family is finally ok with selling the house. Time to move on. The bench has to weigh like 800lbs. So to move it I had to...

Need help with hidden tang size.

So, I'm making my father a stag handle knife for fathers day. I had some very special Damascus steel made for this. More on that later. My issue is this. The steel is almost 1.5 inches wide, 1/8 thick. The antler price I'd like to use looks massive in comparison. So before i go...

    Caused of copying design.

Accused......damn spell check. Some French guy messaged me on Instagram and said I took his friction folder cigar cutter design and copied it. I've never seen or heard of him or his knife. My design came from someone asking me if I could make a cigar cutter, I said no, but I could just...

    Business name, web address......help!

So, I figured that after a year of selling knives through Facebook and Instagram, I'd have my web guy make a site and logo for the knife business. I own and run a personal training studio full time and he did that site and it great. Anyways. The name I've been using online is Campana...

I got my kiln, and slipjoints have been on my list to try once I got caught up on other orders. Is there a general time and temp for most steel that needs to be a spring? I've been looking online and can't find much. Thanks ! Sent from my XT1565 using Tapatalk

    Evenheat kiln.

So, I'll finally be retiring my home made heat treat kiln and ordering a even hear with the tap pro. I was going to go with the 18 over the 13. The difference in cost is minimal. But for those of you in the "know," what's your opinion? If you were going to drop 1200 bucks on a heat treat...

    F. Folder, mokune, mammoth, Damascus.

Stainless steel liners, mammoth tooth scales, mokume bolsters, Damascus steel blade and spacer, g10 liner. This took a long time but I'm happy with the outcome. Paleo bond is your friend when working mammoth tooth, so is the video from Turnage. The client was over the top happy with the...

    Etching Damascus.

So heat treat has been done, temper is finished. Now what? I assume I finish my bevels. But do I need to remove all the scale from heat treat? Or can I just hang it as is in my acid? Also, 20 minutes? This is a piece of Damascus I got from USAknifemaker if that makes a difference. Sent...
