    My first knife: wharncliffe paring

I didn't have any used motor oil lying around, so I used canola oil in a pot that I kept nice and warm on a camp stove by my forge.

    My first knife: wharncliffe paring

Heya, I just finished up my first knife finally! (Been forced away from my tools for a year). First, the design. I'm a cook, and on the left bicep of my chef coats there is a small pocket. Most people keep pens and such in it. I keep a crappy lil paring knife. It gets used more for utility...

    Making steel thinner...massively thinner?

I sent an email. That is exceptionally kind and generous of you. Your a real stand up guy! 2thumbs You don't have to though, it is my own fault for screwing up the math in my head. (I never was really good with numbers). I'll try to make a khurki that can chop a whole car in two!

    Making steel thinner...massively thinner?

Well, thanks for the suggestions. Guess I'll try to use it up. As even shipping it to another member might be pricey. Although, I might give trading a whirl. If not, I have always wanted a khurki...and I guess I can make some monster ones now. Anyone know where I might find a pattern? Or...

    Making steel thinner...massively thinner?

So I bought from Aldo 1/4 thick 4 foot long chunk o steel, 1084. I really screwed up in my head and waaaay overestimated how thick that is. What can I do to make it thinner? Any way but grinding? I don't know anything about forging, but is it suitable to smash thinner? ...learning curve...

    Google sketchup tutorial?

Thanks for the reply. I'm getting a little better with it, but I haven't got down adjusting scale though. Apparently, the knife I drew is over 15 feet long and 6 foot wide!?!?! I don't even think I have enough paper to try and print that out!

    Google sketchup tutorial?

While working on my first knife from a copied pattern, I decided to play around with starting to design my own knife. My drawing skills are horrible, so I want to use google sketchup to make it nice and neat (and to easily make lots of good copies). Anyone know of any tutorials for designing...

    Question on liners/spacers?

The blades are on the same end of the knife. I have the kit (which I am only using as a pattern) and it only came with two ss liners for the outside. (the 2 blade swayback jack from usaknifemakers). I couldn't decide if it was missing one or if there wasn't supposed to be one. Thanks for the...

    Question on liners/spacers?

I'm trying my hand at my first knife, a slippie. I'm using the swayback jack kit knife as a pattern and making it out of 01 (since I have no way to HT ATS-34). Anyway, does it *need* a spacer between the two springs? If so, does it have to be brass or ss? I'm putting jade ghost green scales on...

    O1 Steel

That's some good information! Too bad I found this place *after* I had already bought some O1. So, any tips for heat treating O1 in a one brick forge? If I have to go buy new steel, I do...I'd just rather not if I can work with what I got.

    Hello from WV!

Hi, you can call me Precise. I'm from West Virginia. I've been collecting slipjoints for a bit, and have recently gotten the urge to try and make one myself. That's how I ended up here. Bought some supplies from the website and am catching up all the massive amount of information out there...
