    New Damascus work

There is some twist in there, yes. Twist is what I end up doing once everything has gone to hell. I believe I started out attempting crushed W’s, I still can’t get that right. I like a few more layers usually but those low layer patterns are pretty stunning.

    New Damascus work

I’ve been working pretty hard lately to get some interesting Damascus patterns. The biggest issue I’m having is that coolest ones, are usually screwups at some point and I just have to do something to salvage it.

    It’s been a minute….

Thank you guys. I am definitely in the running for worlds worst photographer. I need to take a minute and actually set stuff up. I really enjoy doing integral bolster knives, but man can they be a pain.

    It’s been a minute….

I haven’t been on much for a while. I’ve still been working, just not as much as usual. I’ve e been enamored with integral bolsters from the very beginning. Here is a look at my latest.

    Just out of the quench

Looks good. I’ve been experimenting with similar designs. Have yet to cut any out, but soon.

How do you get consistent thickness behind the edge on the grinder?

It kinda looks like 2” bump to me. It happens to me regardless of what belt I’m using. Try the above mentioned grinding tips and when you see it pop up don’t start your grind in the same spot. Like go to the middle of the blade rather than off the ricasso and go back and forth from there...

    How Many Knives at Once...

Yeah, roughly. I mean they do t have to be exactly the same but similar. Try a smaller batch, like 4-6. I guarantee you come out of the deal a better grinder. When I’m not doing batches of the same type knife or I’m forging or whatever, I still do 4-5 at the same time. I’ll grind them all at...

    How Many Knives at Once...

I love doing big batches. 12-15 is my wheel house. I feel like by doing stuff in batches I get better at my skills like bevel grinding because I’m doing the same thing over and over.

    I need some hydraulic advice/info

Thank you very much for the information. Very very helpful. I think I’m gonna go with an H-frame. What it gives in strength I find as a huge plus. I’m more than comfortable with the fabrication so I think it should be fairly straight forward.

    I need some hydraulic advice/info

I’ve more or less decided on making my own hydraulic forging press. The problem is I know nothing about hydraulics. Through limited research I’ve decided on a 5” cylinder with 8” of travel. That seems more than adequate for safety and strength, please correct me if I’m wrong. The motor will be...

    Cable damascus

I have a build request for some cable Damascus. What type and size cable is most commonly used? I don’t have any surplus or historic cable so I’m just going to buy some new. Thanks

15N20 to 10** ratio for damascus

All good info, thank you. At this point I was more looking for generalization and/or generic info. I don’t really have any particular pattern in mind right now, but now I know to plan ahead for that sort of thing. Thanks again.

15N20 to 10** ratio for damascus

For those of you guys making Damascus billets, mosaic or otherwise, what ratio of bright (15N20) to dark (10-whatever) are you using? I’ve done a couple billets with pretty much 50/50 and I’m not 100% sold on the look. I used 1/8” stock for both materials. What thickness bright and what...

    New integral

These pictures aren’t great but I think they convey answers to the above questions. I very much appreciate the comments. Thank you. Top view Overall length

    New integral

I worked on this one for what seemed like forever. I was determined to get the scale fit up correct. I burned through about a dozen sets of scales, but I finally got it to my satisfaction. #3 forged integral knife for me, W1 steel, lacewood scales.

    More Damascus trial and error.

Probably as deep of an etch that’s is possible. I accidentally left it in the ferric for 2 days. The ricasso area where it is thickest was originally .187ish. Now it’s roughly .090. I’ll never sell this particular knife because I honestly don’t know what all is going on in there. But im...

    More Damascus trial and error.

Good deal. It probably would have helped had I not taken the photo in top of a dirty shop towel. LOL

    More Damascus trial and error.

Thanks. My picture taking is horrible. 99% of my issues would be fixed if I’d take a second and not rush

    More Damascus trial and error.

I made a press with a 20 ton air over hydraulic Jack from harbor freight. I started out trying to make crushed W’s and it kinda all went to hell from there. When it was clear I wasn’t going to get what I wanted I figured I try some stuff, so I did a 4 way weld (pic below). I drew that out and...
