Thuya burl finish with paste wax.

I use minwax paste wax on thuya and get decent results. I've never accomplished a "glossy" finish like that but it still finishes nicely. I just so happen to have some thuya on my belt... Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk

    I haven't posted in a looong time.

...but I have been making knives This is what I've been doing since my last post and I think it picks up from the last one I posted. The one with the blue liners is currently on the bench. Not a lot of quantity, I have a full time job... Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk

    Got any ideas?

I considered getting a template (just the outline) of one of my knives... Or rat fink on a 2x72 all flamed out and stuff...really depends on your personality. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk

    First hamon!

Okay, update time.I ended up having to go back to a 240 belt to clean up the contaminant marks. I etched and polished with a paste of dish soap and baking soda then washed and repeated and the hamon showed. Thank you again Mr Doyle. I have a plan (remember the "adventurous " thing?) to try for a...

    First hamon!

...also, how did you get the dark finish on that blade? It looks awesome and I intend to attempt it possibly on this knife. I don't have any flitz but I will attempt to polish with some diamond compound (6 and 3 micron I believe...I have some coarser stuff in my box at work)

    First hamon!

Okay so my agenda tonight is to sand the spots from the grease being on the blade off, cleaning with soap and water/baking soda, re etching and then more polishing...and probably a trip to the hardware store for more sandpaper and more polishing. Thanks for the help, I think my biggest problem...

    First hamon!

Thank you that write up was what I needed, I appreciate your patience. ...and those are some beautiful knives. I have been cleaning the blade with denatured alcohol before etching...seemed like a good idea....is there any way to undo the damage from contaminants or do I just have to live...

    First hamon!

Update...been up past my bedtime again... I did a little more polishing and sat down with one of those make up pad thingies and rubbed FC on it until the hamon was quite visible (looked like the blades in the Ryan W. Tutorials as far as depth of darkness and contrast) this was an exciting...

    First hamon!

The mistakes I made...or at least the things I will be taking measures to avoid next time are 1) I believe I left too much stock to grind before heat treat, .04 should be sufficient but I left almost twice that. 2) I had my draw temperature too low for the first two tempers thereby risking a...

Thanks demo...by the way. I doubt I would have had any level of success without those tutorials they're great guidelines.

    First hamon!

The links that DeMo posted below are a lot of help. I ran into a couple of hiccups along the way mostly because I'm adventurous and impatient with a tendency to try to "wing it" or improvise....my advice is don't be like me.

    First hamon!

It was there, I was happy...it was gone, I panicked...it's there. It isn't as prominent as I would like (how do I go about making it show more btw?) I have been staying up way past my bedtime working on this and it apparently paid off. Just when I had almost given up, it showed up. Sorry...

    More hamon questions.

As I was leaving for work today, the ups truck showed up with my ferric chloride so I may stay up until the wee hours of the morning polishing on the blade so I can etch it and see. It also occurred to me that I did a 3rd temper at home (the first two were too low of a temp for 1095) and I...

    More hamon questions.

Okay...so etch then polish? I'm sorry, I'm not intentionally thick headed I promise. I thought that etching came after polishing...then just kind of a touch up to remove oxides from the etchant(then buffing) Im intending to use vinegar because there are no local sources for FeCl here so I'm...

    More hamon questions.

I have no experience with hamons, this is #1 for me. I could see it up to 120 grit if the light hit it right (the light in my shop is terrible) and the scales from HT was long gone by then. It wasn't until the 220 and higher grits that it "disappeared " which is where I verified the...

    More hamon questions.

As some of you may know, I recently did a differential heat treat on a 1095 blade...and I could see the hamon after hitting it with some emery cloth...so it was there.... Now I can't see it.I left an almost unreasonable amount of meat to grind off (I thought it was around .05 but a jig...

    About to take the plunge.

Thanks for calling that to my attention. I'm going to have to do a 3rd temper in the kitchen tomorrow since I'm home from work now. I just wish I had seen this post earlier but those are the joys of work.... I most definitely have a hamon on the blade, I went after it with some emery cloth and...
