Right and Wrong way to "drill out" a full tang

I see images all over the internet of full tang knives being constructed with a bazillion holes drilled in the tangs. I have never been able to wrap my head around the logic of it. I dear friend recently posted a pic, and I stole it to illustrate my point. (Because I only drill TWO, usually...

    A couple of grinder Mods

Two things that I have always thought were/are overlooked on most grinders..... The "knobs" used on the tracking adjustment, and the "shield" for sparks/swarf that is located at/on the idler wheel. I modify all my grinders as soon as they come into the door with the tracking adjust change...

    Easy and cheap file handles

Not sure if I've shared this one..... but most of use use files in one way or another. File tangs can really rip up a hand if you slip, and buying a file handle is stupid pricey. Here's my solution..... Golf balls! Either cheap or free, and all you have to do is drill a hole about 3/4...

    Something with Nostalgia...

I've been hording this piece of handle material since my first mentor gave it to me..... Original Westinghouse Butterscotch PAPER micarta. Westinghouse hasn't produced micarta since 1995, and this particular variety hasn't been produced since 1965! I finally decided it wasn't doing anyone...

    Latest Mosaics.....

Just did a quick "proof" etch on these two..... Got what I wanted in this one... But this one got a bit more compacted then I'd hoped.... Top one is getting turned into a high end hunter for a client. I think I might work on the second one a bit and try to draw it widthwise..... to open...

    KDs Best of 2020....

It's been one crazy year, but..... the last day of 2020 is here! Lets see what you consider your "Best of 2020" knives! My year has been slow. As most know I battle chronic illness and pain, so sometimes I can work, and other times I'm balled up on the couch for days. I did manage a couple...

    An early Christmas present!!

This is what happens when you've been doing this for so long.... you pick up thing along the way, put them "away" with the idea of "I'll remember where that is".... and then YEARS later, you discover it! :) Case in point, a 500lb coil of .060" X 6" wide PRE 1990 1095 steel! I had stashed...

    Some Christmas "Mom" gifts

Luckily Mom doesn't do the internet much, so it's highly unlikely she will see this. Here's the finished product of the Damascus handles measuring cups and spoons...... Mom also does a lot of sewing, so why not make sure your Momma has the finest....... Damascus seam ripper, and needle...

A Wiring/Electrical question for the group

DiverDale's post about the toaster oven, and him saying he's an electrical engineer, prompted me to ask this question. Some of you know I use an old Ridgid 400 pipe threader, as a hot twister in the Forging shop. Because things have to happen so quickly when twisting hot stock, the switch...

    KMG Grinder Direct Drive!

It's not secret that I am a fan of the KMG grinders. I just received an email this morning, that Beaumont is now offering both a direct drive version of the Classic KMG grinder, AND a conversion kit to direct drive for existing KMG grinders...

A jig/vise for the Hot Shop

I've used this device in the shop for a long time, but never thought it was worth sharing until a fellow Bladesmith was in the shop yesterday, saw it, and inquired about what it was..... It's vise I built as a holding device for 4-ways, or for situations where I wanted to assemble/hold things...

    A forging tip...

For those who use a press or a power hammer, with any kind of manipulation dies (hole punching, opening accordions, or anywhere else that you to prevent hot steel from sticking)..... this stuff is really good! Its dry graphite spray. I've been using it for years, but never thought to mention...

OK.....Since we're on the subject of breaking things... may be disturbing

As a friend put it.... "You broke the unbreakable!!" :) If nothing else, I found the limit on what a Ridgid 400 pipe threader will handle when twisting damascus. I was working on a largish project, and tried to twist some 2" round nickle/1080 damascus.... the old gal just couldn't handle...

    Metal Cutting Bandsaw

Hey Gang..... just wanted to share. My Jet, 7 x 12 bandsaw is about on it's last leg. It's been around for over 20 years, and the gearbox/bearings are overheating with light use. So.... before year's end, and because I can write it off on taxes, I've been nosing around, looking for a new saw...

    Some "StarFire" Mosaic Damascus

Was feeling decent today, and with cooler weather.....off to the Hot Shop! A few hours later this happens..... It's tough to get a decent shot of a freshly etched billet with the Iphone.....but you get the idea. It's at 1 1/4" square right now..... debating as to weather I should...
