Didn't plan on smithing, but I couldn't resist

Vector 66lb cast steel Image above ∆ I was planning on just doing stock removal, but too many projects I want to make seem to be demanding it. So I couldn't resist this deal. I didn't have a steel ball bearing but this glass one rebounds at near as I can tell about 95.8% (11.5" from 12"). It...

Asking Questions on a Technical Forum

Perhaps it might be interesting to write a similar list from the perspective of any one of those respondents. I am sure that each finds an annoyance in many of the people that come demanding all sorts of things. I have seen someone try such a thing in one of the programming forums. I don't think...

Asking Questions on a Technical Forum

It was a list. It started out as an explanation to someone who basically gave up on a particular forum because of the responses they got. I felt someone else might enjoy it. If not, no biggie.

Asking Questions on a Technical Forum

Obviously it would be a gross generalization to say that all forums are the same with equal ratios and such. You should see the humorous response I got to this on a similar forum. :)

Here is one of his YT videos where he actually does forge heat treating instead of relying on furnace

Asking Questions on a Technical Forum

If you have been on the internet long enough you will find most technical forums will have the following standard respondents to your questions. This is not specific to knife makers, but perhaps they pertain. :) 1. Nike... Just do it. This is common in many verticals. Many very skilled and...

    torsion spring question

A picture might help. Normally there is outside support of the spring. I have one that has a spring cage to support it. You might have either too long of a spring so the upper coils are not supported, or possibly too narrow of an OD also giving to a lack of support. There should either be a...

Right place? Automatic and inner workings

I now have 3 automatics. They are all cheap (cost wise) but I am focusing on just one for this. First of all, correct me if I get the terminology off since I have yet to find good documentation on the inner workings and most forums I have perused tend more towards the collecting and using...

Help Me ID this Automatic with a squirrel?

Lunch time gives me the chance to get away from my desk. Couldn't find the EZ-Out but a couple drill bits followed by a small torx driver and voila. So, here's what I have. I still haven't gotten the bolsters off yet. Perhaps tonight. So the coil spring has a cage. I am not sure if it is glued...

Help Me ID this Automatic with a squirrel?

Okay, I know she's in a really bad way. But most of the parts are there and the mechanism works (or at least it will when I add a stop pin that is missing in the top) This looks like it was either lost in the mud, or tossed away so as not to be caught with it. Funny, the majority of the knife is...

    Knife design ipad

It is a great program. I don't really do.anybgraphics at work so I don't have it on my Mac. But it is on every Linux box I own. And because it can save in reasonable formats, you can pull it into CAD programs or other stuff. You can even use it to modify simple PDFs.

No Nothing wrong with that. I can do it but no longer find it relaxing. I like the precision I can get with CAD or sketching software. No judgement, just a different technique with a different tool.

    Knife design ipad

Not being a Mac person (other than at work) I wouldn't know the titles. But as far as I am aware Inkscape is available for the Mac. I am a big proponent of FOSS.

So both of those are committed to SVG image. That is vector based, rather than raster. What means is that I can scale them up or down with zero loss. I could make an image the size of a postage stamp, or as large as a bill board without any pixelation. Inkscape is free, and that is complete...

    Knife design ipad

And just for fun, here is what I came up for the Case Toothpick based on online images from several sales, and ebay pictures in different orientations. Not quite as easy because I wanted to do the internals as well, but had to just "figure them out" once pas the kick/ricasso. Here is an...

    Knife design ipad

Inkscape is awesome for drawing stuff. You can trace things really well also. It takes a little practice, but given a nice straight on view I can outline a knife in less than 10 minutes. There is also a "trace bitmap" feature but it doesn't exactly work the way you think. I have used it, but...

    New toy in the shop

Yeah. I haven't come up with anything steel that I need to turn. Phosphor/Aluminum Bronze, brass, nickel silver, and perhaps some precision sizing on some stainless but thinking about a few thou to take some .098 down to 3/32 or something like that. Not sure how I feel about making screws, but...
