Can sheath leather damage a blade?

I found years ago that with well applied wetting with mineral oil, it actually offers some protection from rust, and discourages pests that might want to eat on it, AND NO mineral oil does not harm vege-tanned leather.

    Preventing Decarb during HT?

01 and A2 steel. I do one coat, let dry over night, then another coat, dry with hair dryer, then a third coat along the edge, which is .010/.015, dried with hairdryer. Then do the HT. I get no detectable decarb unless I miss a spot.

    Another Heat Treat Question...

Why would you quench at 190°? Your quenchant should not go above 140° unless you are working towards marquenching

    A-2 question.

I used my EvenHeat oven. Been a while since I HTed any A-2, but I think I heated to 1775° with a soak.

    A-2 question.

When I worked with A-2, I took it to final dimension. No edge problems ever. I cooled with forced air and the blades were coated with ATP-641.

    Preventing Decarb during HT?

I worked with 01 for over 10/12 years, and used the ATP 641. I took my blades to finished dimensions ready to give an edge to. I stress relieved at 1200° for an hour with no coating, then I single coated the day before HT and added a second coat the following day that I dried with a hair drier...

    Wat to use

You can check upper range for common steels by melting table salt in your oven. Common table salt melts at 1474°F. Just give it a reasonable soak time for it to happen. My oven takes as much as 10/15 minutes to climb, match set temp, and level off after the coupling starts the timer cycling...

Question on releasing pressure on belt grinder

Cliff, I think all it does is to keep the belt from stretching. I take the tension off when I remember to, but that is not always. Over the years I have had 0ne 2x72 break, and 2 or 3 6x48's. All were older belts and very exposed to high humidity.

    Knife holder

Same as Mike Miller. Fire brick with slots cut in. This elevates the blades closer to the thermocouple for a little more accurate temp, and also acts some as a heat retainer when opening and closing door, and with temp fluctuations during cycling.

    Annealing a file.

Sorry. Hypereutectic is a steel with more than .77 /.8 % carbon. Iron will only absorb that amount into a homogenous solution. Hypoeutectic steel has less than .8% carbon. Any extra carbon is in the form of carbides and will be distributed about as sort of free agents. When steel is slow...

    Annealing a file.

That's "farrier" gents. A farrier is a specialist in equine hoof care, including the trimming and balancing of horses' hooves and the placing of shoes on their hooves, if necessary. If you are going to use stock removal, you might want to stay with regular files. Grinding the teeth down on a...

    Annealing a file.

Depends on why you need to anneal it. If you just want it soft enough to drill a few holes, heat 2 or 3 times to a low red heat letting it air cool between heats. If you want a machinable anneal, heat to between 1275° and 1290°, hold for an hour, then let cool about 50° per hour until it gets...

An appeal / Photobucket just committed suicide!

Smugmug is $47.88 annual. There are cheaper outfits, and some free ones. What advantage is smugmug?

An appeal / Photobucket just committed suicide!

Something I did not think about until now. Any photos you have posted through photobucket, will now, or soon, have broken links, and be gone. Photos in tutorials will vanish if they were posted via photobucket. This stinks and is a low blow and an insult to all who patronized these SOB's.

    What is it called??

I suspect that is a, or the, liner rolled over to make a collared entry. Decent sheath, but I see no reason to collar it. Just me, but I think it makes it look a little bulky, but to each his own.

    First knife; planning stage

Immediate temper is not a critical issue with 01. I always wait 2 to 3 hours in order to let my oven cool down to the point that I can re-set the controls for temper. I have even let a few blades sit over night, but I would not recommend doing that. If using a kitchen range, be sure you use a...

    First knife; planning stage

PG 01 is annealed and ready for HT as is. 01 is a good choice of steel, IF, you have heat control good enough to evenly soak it for about 15 /20 minutes. You need to go with a lower temp of about 800 c, or 1475 f. Heat the canola to around 125°/130°. Do expect a layer of decarb on the steel from...
