Quick question... does an electric motor have to be 3 phase to use a vfd with it?

Should i build a tire hammer or a forging press? Space isn't an issue but money sure is. I have good welding skills and access to plenty of steel. I'm more concerned about the cost to build, cost to operate and maintain, and versatility etc.

I just did my first forge weld!!! I used 15n20 and 1084 from Aldo, 8 layers. One problem though when i cut it partially in half and went to fold it back on it's self for the next weld the middle layer came apart. But other than that i couldn't be happier. :biggrin:

So im tapping some holes on a new forge i'm building with and 6-32 tap and wouldn't ya know it. TINK! the tap snapped off pretty much flush with the hole. "no big deal" I thought to myself. I have another tap so I just moved the hole over a bit, and guess what? TINk!! So I went out and bought...

Could someone tell me why Titanium doesn't make a good blade/tool? Is it the lack of hardenability?

Ok, so after my first (horribly failed) attempt at making some 1095/15n20 damascus, I remembered that getting the steel too hot causes grain growth. So my question is How do you reduce the grain size after forge welding? Just normalize it?

I have access to alot of HVAC/refrigeration mineral oil and i'm wondering if it would it be the same, or close to, Vet. grade mineral oil for quenching 1084 and 5160?

What size/style forging hammer would be best for a beginner? I use a 2.5lb cross pein, but i don't feel like i can control it well enough, and If I use my 12oz. sheet metal hammer It takes alot longer and makes alot of annoying dents in my blades. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks -Adam

What is a good way to tell the difference wrought iron and other metals? like mild steel, etc.

Does anyone know what kind of glue will work on kydex? I'm planning on making a leather sheath with a kydex insert and I don't know if i will have room for rivets.

I'm making a small pukko style knife out of 1095, and I need to peen the end of the tang to hold it all together. I've never done this type of knife before, so my question is... Does anyone have any tips for doing this? Do I try to just clamp the blade in a vise while peening? or stick the tip...

Ok i made an anvil (doing the best i can with what i have), and i also would like to make some hardy tools. could someone tell me what size the hardy hole is on a real anvil? i'm thinking 1" square but i'm not sure. Also, same question about the pritchel hole. Adam

Ok i'm making a burner, (In over my head as usual)...long story short I have a 3/8" brass male fitting coming off of it, and my fancy new regulator hose has some kind of weird 5/8" female fitting on it. It said 5/8-18 UNF on the hose. What do I need to connect the two? I need to get this thing...
