Anyone work hackberry?

I bought a few pieces of spalted hackberry and hackberry burl from a local veneer producer in Southern Indiana. Has anyone worked hackberry and could you offer tips? It feels light and somewhat porous, which makes me worry that it may suck up stain fast and perhaps unevenly. I've made a few scales, but am definitely a beginner, looking for ideas and help. Thanks!

I've worked with it before, and it's simply not usable unless it's stabilized. Many options out there for stabilizing. I'd highly encourage that it be "professionally" stabilized.

I would stabilize any spalted wood and it's a good idea with most burls to stabilize also. You've combined both of them.
