Cleaning surface conditioning belts

Any ideas on how to clean surface conditioning belts?
The debris leaves smearing on steel and the belt is real new. Air blast doesn't remove the material and I'm apprehensive to use a piece of steel to rough it up.

Would regular belt conditioners ( the ones that are like stones) work?

I use a heavy wire brush and just kinda hold it at not quite 90 degrees scrub it side to side on low speed.

...so yesterday I was asking myself "How do I clean my conditioning belt"... and, OMG look what pops up on KD forum.
A bit spooky!
I'll try that wire brush idea.

Tried a short bristle, brass brush, (all I had on hand), and it fuzzed the belt up a bit, but it didn't remove the swarf from deeper inside.
This helped unless I bear down hard.
Not sure if it makes any difference; this belt in particular has only been used on stainless steel.
