Etching Damascus.

So heat treat has been done, temper is finished. Now what? I assume I finish my bevels. But do I need to remove all the scale from heat treat? Or can I just hang it as is in my acid? Also, 20 minutes? This is a piece of Damascus I got from USAknifemaker if that makes a difference.

Yes, the surface should be completely finished prior to etch

One part ferric chloride to say 3 parts of water. If a blade hang on a hook so all surfaces have contact . I figure on 12 minutes but check after 7 or 8 minutes. Use your finger nail. Can you feel the ridges? If not go longer and check again. areas you do't want to etch like the path the detent ball will take should be covered with finger nail polish. I forgot. Finish down to at least 400
