Etching problem

I could just kick myself! I was putting on a handle last knight and got here glued up and is curing right now. I was going to shape and finish the handle tonight. Well I went over to look at it and realized that I didn't etch the makers mark on it! One thing I am not good at yet is getting scratches out when the handle are on. The finish doesn't really stay the same especially when the front of the handle isn't flat. When I etch I usually end up with a halo around it. Please tell me there is a way to etch with out having to grind off the micarta handles.

Tape it off really good with scotch tape. Maybe put some renwax on the parts you dont want marked up. You just have to be careful not to do too much and keep the liquid wiped off as much a s possible not letting it get too wet.

both. it will go a bit slower but it wont mark up as bad
