Hey All,

My name is Tom Barron and I hail from the great state of Texas. I’ve been hanging around the forum for a short while, soaking in all the great work you guys do. I’m so amazed by the talent and creativity that come from this community.

I don’t consider myself a knife maker, having never made a knife until now. I’m just a fan. I spend most of my time casting and turning pens on the lathe. My specialty of sorts is casting alligator jawbone pen blanks. I came up with a knife scale concept some months ago and sent the great Chris Williams a few sets. He made this outstanding knife from one of the sets.

I humbly submit my first attempt at knife making. It is a proof of concept in that I wanted to see for myself how the bone and resin held up to the knifemaking process. I took two opposing jawbones, cut them to shape and cast them in Alumilite resin. The scales are made to appear as a bookmatched set. The knife is a skinner with an overall length 6” and a blade length of 2 ¼”. I used brass pins and G-10 liners to round out the supply list.

I was very pleased with the way the scales sanded on my grinder. I have a 2 x 36 multitool bench grinder attachment that spins at 1,725 RPM. Once I finished rough shaping I assembled everything together with epoxy, did some hand sanding and finished the project with a 3 wheel buffer.

All comments and criticisms are welcome.

Thanks!

Tom

Tom you did an excellent job for your first knife- your grinds are very good and notches look good. That handle material is pretty unique- looks good enough to eat- and somehow looks really good on that little knife. Keep up the the good work- you're definitely on right track.
