Hey guys. I've got to go over to Tampa, FL this weekend to pick up a new English Springer Spaniel puppy. I checked and the Tampa Gun and Knife Show is there at the Fairgrounds this weekend. Since I'm there anyway I signed up for a table. Anybody ever been to this show or know anything about it? Good show?, good for knives?, etc, etc. thanks for any info. Always appreciate you guys.

Bad for knives. The show is owned by Shoot Straight, a big gun shop based out of Orlando. I did the Orlando show once. Won’t do it again.

I wouldn't say it's owned by Shoot Straight. they have a lot of tables at the show though. I've been to this show probably a dozen times over the years but haven;t gone in probably the last three.
The reason I stopped going is because of
1- The crowds are out of this world
2- There used to be pretty good deals on guns, not so much now. I deal with a local FFL now that gets me anything I want for $25 over cost that I find, and he has a good selection himself reasonably priced.
3- Just walking in the door your out 20 bucks between parking fees and admission, not to mention gas and time getting there.
4 - I've heard the venue has changed to get rid of the people selling jerky, jewelry, flashlight's and other stuff, but I can't say, the last time I went there was a lot of junk being hawked.
5- All that being said, there's usually some knife tables set up, not much custom or handmade stuff and I don't know any knifemakers that had tables set up at this show, I believe this is primarily for guns.
I'll add this....keep a sharp eye on your table and don't place any knives to close to the edge, like I said, this is a big show and there's a lot of shifty people in that building. that's one other reason I don't go anymore.
But hey, being surrounded by guns and like minded people always makes for a good day, I hope you sell some knives and enjoy yourself.
Good luck!

I meant that the show is literally owned by Shoot Straight, not merely that shoot straight has the most tables.. The reason that shoot straight had a third of the tables at the Orlando show is that shoot straight bought the Florida gun show company couple of years back. They may not have bought the ones in the panhandle because if you go to their website to reserve a table they refer you elsewhere for the ones in the panhandle. There are still a couple of other show promoters in Florida, but they tend to use different venues. The shows at the Florida State Fairgrounds, the Central Florida Fairgrounds, and the South Florida Fairgrounds in Miami are the same company. One of the other companies runs the show at the Miccosukee Casino in Miami among other places in the third, I believe called two guys gun shows, runs the big show in Sarasota and at least one here in Pinellas County. Shoot straight also eliminated the “gun show loophole” or, as perhaps most of us know it, “brown bagging ” at there shows For purely financial reasons.

Oh and as for your competition as a knife maker/seller, You were competing against long time table holders that sell lots of Chinese fantasy crap and the occasional cheap folder or automatic on some other peoples tables.

Here are the knives I sold.
1 Scagel Inspired Hunter
11 Fossilized Mammoth Hunter
111 Buffalo Hunter
1111 Small Filet Knife
1111 French Hunter

Glad to hear you did well WM, do you live in Florida?

No Steve, I live in Las Cruces, NM and I would have never spent the money to just come to a Gun & Knife Show in Florida. I just purchased a new English Springer Spaniel puppy from a breeded in Clearwater and had to come over there anyway to pick him up so I checked around and found the show in Tampa - two birds with one stone so-to-speak.

I'm glad to hear you did good at the show, that place always brings in a lot of people.
I did a Safari Club fundraiser a week ago and had a really good show too, I saw a lot of people spending money, the economy is good right now.
How did you like the traffic here in Clearwater? I live about three miles from the beach and it's really bad everywhere around here.
any pictures of your new pup?

So THAT is where the people with money were hiding ;) my problem with the Orlando show was not that people didn’t like my stuff, but that they were supposedly out of money.

Yes and No. It originally an antique china cabinet with shelves. I took the shelves out and made it into a gun case.
