After the Heat Treat:
I always Cryo.

.....but if I should want to skip the Cryo and go straight to the Temper.
Now the kiln is too hot to Temper right away????? so:
1. How long can I to wait before the Temper? (Kiln may take hours to cool down)
2. Must I have another Kiln. (amateur here, can't afford two Kiln)

Help!

Note - I do CPM 154, 440C, D2,

I would suggest with those steels, that even overnight would not be problem, though best practice is usually ASAP after hand warm. If you are concerned, you could always do a flash temper in the kitchen oven - maybe 100F below your intended temp, just in case oven temp is off. Even 30 minutes in boiling water will take some of the stress off.

Prompt tempering is much more important with steels like 1095 and W2.

edited to add; several hour at room temp is likely less stressful that the several hours in cryo.

if you are tempering at low temperatures, less than 500F, you could use regular oven. an idea would be a toaster oven with convection setting, the fan would help keep the temperature fairly even. you should be able to find one for $50 or so.
