When the M1 Carbine was first issued it was produces without a bayonet lug, as part of the barrel band. Instead, the M3 knife was issued to all who carried the carbine. These are getting difficult to find, as when the Carbines were returned for repair, later in the War, the new old barrel band was replaced with the new on that had the bayonet lug attached.
This example is an Imperial guard marked M3. The first models were issued with markings on the blade. Guard marked M3's were made to reduce the chance of breakage. I have the blade marked also, however not yet photographed. If any have an interest in seeing one, please let me know and I will provide it.
