Using Anti-Scale compound for stainless (ATP) instead of foil?

I was curious if anyone has used the ATP 641 for heat treating their stainless and had excellent results?

Anti-scale typically won't hold up to 1850F - seems like I've read about 1600F is about max for anti-scale. AND - some of the SS require 30 minutes of soak - and anti-scale just burns off well before that time in soak.

If you want to work SS - get the foil. There are a couple of sources were small rolls can be purchased - I use 321 with no problems at 1950F for sandvik SS. http://www.mcmaster.com/#tool-wrap/=qkf0y6 has the 321 for about $33 shipped for a 10 ft roll.

Boss has the 309, but is out of stock on the 321 foil.

Dissenting Opinion. I believe the ATP 641 is rated higher than you will ever require. I have used it to 2150. Having said that, it is possible to get cleaner results with foil. I know you hate making the envelopes. I don't think you'll like applying the ATP641 much better. It tends to bead up and often requires re-coating. It also fills your quench tank with crud if you are using oil.

Ken is right - foil is best - and use only the 309.

(Opinion - worth exactly what you paid for it) :3:

I stand corrected! That stuff is rated for 2300F. When will I learn to keep my mouth shut?

321 may let me down next time, but for the last several blades it has worked just fine.. 321 is rated for 2000F, so should work ok for 1900F. But, I've already shown what I know.

I'm not sure of this, but I suspect .002, 309 or 321 is the same stuff (respectively) no matter the brand, but some sell 321 as good for 1800 and others as 2000

USAKM - 321 - 2000F - 309 - 2240F
ENCO - 321 - 1800F - 309 - 2100F
Jantz - 321 - 1900F - 309 - 2200F

Having said all that, I think Ken is right. I meant to say WE only use 309 - specifically because we are doing other people's blades. I'm pretty sure if it was my own blades, I'd be using 321 on a lot of steels too.
