Vermiculite or Pearlite

I need to pick one of these to anyone recommended one over the other??

Over the years, vermiculite has been recommended more. I keep an old aluminum cooler filled with the stuff.

I'm confused... Vermiculite is a mineral. Whereas Pearlite is a type of steel. Am I missing something?

Okay...got it! Actually I've used new cat litter. Seems to do the job and it's cheaper.
