Well these pics pretty much suck but they give an idea... my shop is in the garage, I had an electrician run 40 amps of power out from the house's 100 amp box, me and a buddy put a boat-load of outlets in and wired 'em up. We also hung some flourescents to brighten the place up; there will be more smaller flourescents behind the bench to kill shadows, but I don't have them mounted yet.
All the power-tool outlets are 20 amps, the accessory outlets are 15 amps. There's a dedicated 20-amp outlet for the kiln, which isn't installed yet :/
The whole shop is insulated at a minimum of R11, fully moisture-barriered and sheathed with OSB. Thank God, the roof is in good shape and doesn't leak at all. We reinforced the joists and put a floor in the attic for storage space, lots of room up there. The garage door is lined with pink foamboard stuff and all cracks/seams throughout are sealed with "Great Stuff" foam to stop wind/leaks. I think I used 7 or 8 cans of "Great Stuff" but it was worth it.
I bought a basic B&D paint sprayer to slap some white primer, then paint on the walls, really helps brighten the place up.
Total cost so far... about $2500 to make a basic shell of a garage into a fairly decent shop. DON'T tell the tax assessor!!
Plenty of power and space, but I still need to put a natural gas furnace in so I can work comfortably in the winter months. That will prolly cost me about $600. In the long run, it will be much more efficient than running a kerosene or electric heater.
I didn't take pics of the south wall because it's cluttered with lumber scraps and camping stuff
pic 1... couldn't ask for a nicer location. Behind the shop is a rather large wetland/forest/swamp that houses deer, woodpeckers, bunnies, all that good stuff. I can't go get the mail in winter without seeing turkey and coon tracks in the snow. I see wildlife on a daily basis, and that makes me smile. Very little traffic noise; been here almost a year and I still haven't heard a cop siren or neighbors fighting. 2thumbs Yet I'm only a couple miles from grocery stores, hospital, my kid's school, etc.
pic 2... main bench with the grinder and drill press. The 2x42 will one day get replaced with a proper 2x72, but for now, it's earning its keep
pic 3... I think I have enough handle materials to last a while
pic 4... if you were as handsome as me, you'd wear a full-face-shield too! Or, if you were as ugly as me, you'd hide your mug too... whichever helps you sleep at night
